Purging Old Inactive Accounts

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
I am starting the process to purge old inactive accounts immediatly. We are defining inactive accounts as accounts who have not had any activity in the past 2 years.

In the first phase I am going to immediately set the status of any inactive accounts who are not validated to deleted. This will give the account owners a period of two weeks to log in and set the accounts back to active. Since these accounts are not validated we do not have a reliable email address to contact the account owner with.

The second part of the first phase will involve emailing any validated but inactive accounts and warning them that their accounts will be set to deleted status in two weeks.

The second phase will occur in two weeks. The first part will be when the deleted accounts are automatically purged and the second part will be to set the status of any inactive but validated accounts to deleted.

The third phase will take place two weeks after phase 2 when the phase 2 deleted accounts are automatically purged by the system.

We will NOT include Self-Committed[paid] or Permanently Insane accounts in the account purge.

What this means is that when an account is purged, it is immediately available for use by an existing account via the use of a rename token. Rename tokens are available in the InsaneJournal Store for $5. If you have any questions or concerns with this process, please raise them in the comments to this post.
  • This makes me abit sad. I understand purging accounts that the owner deleted themselves, but I do not think any account that has not been deleted by the owner should be purged; regardless of time.

I understand that all they do is take up space and make you no money, but I like the idea of an old journal that is no longer used existing still like any handwritten journal...
    • From another PoV

Online journals can be like a dearly loved and cherished handwritten journal. But they can also be like a Lisa Frank notebook that someone has hundreds of and never uses them, only to pile them in a closet somewhere where they're never to be seen or remembered again. :P
      • Re: From another PoV

        Best. Analogy. Ever.
        • Re: From another PoV

*bows* I'm glad someone got it. XD

          Ahh childhood.
          • Re: From another PoV

ROFL. I used to save those and hoard ALL my Lisa Frank stuff. XDD I'd put my stickers in a plastic sheet instead of using them. I-it was shiney and pretty and awesome and why would I want to waste it? D:
            • Re: From another PoV

Haha, pretty much! I used the stuff but I was like "I'll get more when this is no longer useable!". Man I miss the days when her stuff was cool, now it just looks weird and cheesy... well the newer stuff.
      • Re: From another PoV

We are letting the owners know that we are doing this. The vast majority of these journals have never been used. The owners of these journals will have the opportunity to keep their journals by simply logging in once.
        • Re: From another PoV

Yep yep! I bought a token already but even if I don't get the account I've been waiting for, at least I've supported the website. ♥
          • Re: From another PoV

I am guessing by the time we are done we are going to have about 8000-9000 freed up usernames
            • Re: From another PoV

              Wow, definitely a free up.

I was just stating that no matter the end results, it was money well spent. Sure, it's only 5 dollars but it's going towards the site. And when I can, of course I'll support it more!

If the one I really want becomes active or any of the others I glanced at then oh well. I mean, there will be no list so I'd draw a blank on where and how to use the token, least for now. But that's okay! Because like I said, well spent!

I've definitely wasted more then that in my lifetime with negative results. :P This is a win-win for me. Heh.
      • Re: From another PoV

Indeed it can be like that. But who is to judge.
      • Re: From another PoV

WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY CLOSET?!
        • Re: From another PoV

          .... :O
*slowly backs out but takes the Fear Street books with her*
          • Re: From another PoV

PSh. The Fear Street books are still on my bookshelf. Babysitter's Club is in the closet.
    • They are probably only purging names that have never been updated/show no activity at all. There's no point in someone just hoarding decent journal names just to look cool.
      • Any abandoned journal two years or older will be purged unless the owner doesn't do anything to stop it. All someone would have to do is log in to preserve an old journal they aren't using anymore, since that counts as activity. Or to be very certain, make a private entry.

Basically it's journals that show no activity in the last two years.

In keeping with the cherished journal in the closet analogy, it would be a bit like suddenly remembering it's there and opening it up to have a peek.
    • If the owner agrees, all they have to do is respond to the email squeaky sends out :)
      • They'd have to log in so their journal showed activity. That's even less effort than responding to an e-mail.
    • i hope they're only purging journals with basically nothing in them, no entries or anything. it'll suck if they're purging journals that someone put a lot of entries and time into and still reads. like sure, the email is sent out warning them but half of my old journals are to yahoo.com emails i never use anymore so in my case, i probably wouldnt ever see the warnings.
      • I don't know how common it is, but if someone is still reading a journal they haven't otherwise used in two years, they might be registering as active, since all the owner has to do is log in to show that the journal is active.

Anyhow, the majority of journals that will be purged are the kind that basically were never used. It will include any journals that were used but haven't been touched in two years though.
      • I agree.
    • You're getting warned about it. Just go log into the old journal and comment on something or post an entry and it won't be considered inactive anymore.
