Site down overnight

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
We are aware of the issues with the site being down from around midnight to 4am the past 3 nights. It seems we have gotten yet another mass influx of users. We will have the issues resolved by tomorrow night at the latest.

Thanks you for your patience and understanding while we work to upgrade the hardware here at InsaneJournal.
  • I'm going to sound like a broken record but thank you, thank you, thank you. Flat out, this announcement completely sold me for IJ over any other journal site out there.
  • I just want to say that I love it here. ♥ I joined after Strikethrough 07 and have found this place to be so welcoming - I've definitely found my online journal home.
    • I too joined after Strikethrough07 (though I was never a part of fandom), and I love how this place is so inviting!
  • Ouch! I'm so sorry we're crashing the servers on you. And yes, I think you can expect another big influx after the "clarification" LJ posted last night. IJ has become the refuge of choice on my flist. I'm happy here, and impressed enough with the set up and with you, that I paid for a permanant account already. And once I get my next paycheck, I'll be paying for a permanant account on my second journal.

Thank you for being so available to your users. I know this has got to be a pretty big headache for you. *hugs*
  • See, now, that's how someone communicates with their patron base. Thank you.
  • Yep yet another immigrant waves hello here! And as someone mentioned I'm part of the very recent influx influenced by last night's "clarifications" post. I've heard lot of good things about this place and I can't wait to fully set in. Yay!
  • I read your bio on your site and it confirmed two things:
    - You sound like a nice guy :)
    - Graphic design isn't your first language :P
(though I'm told paid accounts are prettier? Hmm.)

    I have a question:
How do you feel about Brad, and can I have that in writing? - i.e. what are your plans for the future should the crazy masses migrate here and generate a shit-load of "content" you find is worth serious money in some way or other?

    :) meg
    • HAH! I agree I am a programmer at heart. I tried to play with graphic design only to realize I am terrible at it.

Personally I think Brad is a genius and a visionary. He is more responsible for the social networking aspect of the Internet than anyone out there.

I think he made a bad decision in selling his company to Six Apart and I am pretty sure he regrets it often.

In the future I would like to keep this site independent. At best I would quit my day job and work on the site full time, but right now it doesn't pay enough to support my family, so I have to keep my 9-5. It has been a dream for quite some time to be able to work on InsaneJournal as a full time job, but reality states that I am going to have to have enough money on hand to live off of for awhile before I am going to take that risk. I do have a wife, a 5 year old daughter and a mortgage to think of.
      • Thanks for replying :)

        So what you're saying is:
        - You hope IJ will become your full time job, but you think that's still a ways off into the future?

        - And you don't expect it will become really big (and/ or tempting to investors) but if so, you're not going to sit here today and say you won't make a profit in some way?
(Though you think Brad regrets selling.)

Sorry for bothering you, but I'm very interested in knowing :P
I do think you're doing an excellent job, I might add.
      • You know, with all these new users, you should consider running a contest for a redesign of the site (personally, it doesn't bother me, but it's one of the things I saw most cited in the "cons" lists people were making of various alternatives to LJ). Maybe gift the winner with a free perm account or something.

        Just a thought :)
      • Yay! You have no idea how happy that comment just made me. Hooray for you!
  • Thank you for the update, and for working to accommodate all of us new users -- it's encouraging to see that the admin here is actually invested in the site. You make it seem like a good place to stick around. I've just paid for my account.
  • I haven't said anything though I've had my IJ for a month or so now, but thank you for being cool.

    Seriously. Thanks.
  • I can't imagine why you would be getting an influx of users. ;-)
  • This and your responses to the comments here is exactly why I bought a permanent account.
Thank you for your efforts and welcome. ^_^
    • Thanks for supporting us.
      • Actually, as much as it was not much money for you, it was a big deal for me. ^_^ This is the first time I have paid for something on the internet but I really do feel like it is worth it.
I am not sure that everyone is getting from your comments that you have moved recently and life is a bit hectic, so thank you again for everything! Including dealing with all of us immigrants. ^_~
I also saw that you figured the combo of issues; though I am not a techie, it does make me feel better to know what is going on. Otherwise, my brain comes up with exploding servers. (It happened! On campus due to a squirrel.)
  • You can add my thanks too. I came here looking a few days before the newest bruhaha over at LJ and liked it so much I bought a permacct. I've been letting my flist and various other comms I belong to know how nice it is here at IJ.
  • I'd like to thank you for not only the announcement, but being so welcoming.

    *throws roses at your feet*
  • Thank you.

Seriously, all of us 'immigrants' appreciate the open welcome we have received here. I know for a fact that we have all tried very, very hard to be loyal to our previous host, but they have made it impossible for us to stay, and still act within the guidelines of our conscience.
That said, I am sure I speak for at least mostof us when I say that we will now be giving our loyalty to our new home, here at IJ. You can certainly expect that I will be getting a paid account just as soon as my finances allow it.
    Thanks again.
  • . It seems we have gotten yet another mass influx of users.

Heh, say hello to all the LJ refugees, thanks for putting up with us!
  • Another disgruntled former LJ user here, and I wanted to thank you both for this wonderful site and for making us feel so welcome.

Now, it might be terribly brazen of me to make a suggestion before I even had a chance to unpack, but would you consider raising the friendslist limit of Free Patients? I realise there may be a good reason for that limit, but it would *significantly* increase the number of new accounts if that were possible. I realise there may be cost issues, but I know for a fact that people who would shell out the money for a paid account are reluctant to move, because their friends who can't afford it presently are choosing other journaling alternatives.

I personally would love for the majority of the LJ refugees to end up here. This place feels safer and more reliable than any of the alternatives, and you come off as a very honest guy (plus, any site admn with some of the interests in your profile is cool in my book *g*)
  • I've been unhappy with LJ for a long time, been planning to leave there for nearly a year and the recent wankery there has finally driven me away. Also now more and more of my friends are starting to realise the same and are also moving away. I wish I'd found IJ a year ago. I think what you are doing here is awesome. The site reminds me of the old Diary-X community (may it rest in peace), which was so great because it was run by a guy who really LOVED what he was doing, and was dedicated to it, and I'm definitely getting the impression that it's the same here.

I finally managed to get paypal working and I bought a permanent account. I'm not even disappointed that I missed the $30 sale. I still think its great value.

    Squeaky, you rock.
  • Thank you for being a great alternative to LJ. I'm letting my paid account run out there and once I get a new job I'll be either a paying or permanent member. =)
  • Sorry I helped break everything with my migration XD I will support this site as best I can, having seen the way you handle things :3
