Upcoming Account Purge

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
It's been a number of years since we've done one, but server space requires that we purge some inactive things from our servers. We are currently reviewing the parameters we are going to set to decide what gets purged and what doesnt. We are hoping to preserver all useful content and don't intend to delete any users that still have valid content in case any users still want to access this beyond the purge. This post will serve as a forum to discuss what the community feels about this and what parameters you all would like us to consider.
  • One thing we are absolutely doing is that any account that has upgraded status will not be purged. So if you an account has Early Inmate, Self-Committed, Orderly, or Hospital Administrator status it will NEVER get purged. Also any account that has been marked as Memorial is safe from purge.
  • Will you warn before you purge or just purge?

I know a lot of us who use these accounts for roleplayinig have "empty" accounts but are active on communities. Will those be taken into consideration or do I need to literally go into every RP account I have and make a post so that it's not deleted?
  • I don't remember the last purge since it's been a couple years, like you said, but A: will emails be sent out to notify us first if a journal is to be purged and B: if not, is there a way that they COULD be sent out?

Also, WOULD we have to make a post or would just logging into a journal be enough to make them active? Again, I forget how it works.

If something gets flagged, will we be notified via email and have the means to change the potential deletion? Or are we out of luck because the servers need space? Something I may not post to my journal but use in a community for roleplaying shouldn't be flagged as that's not fair.
  • this is actually an rp account i am commenting from and the only account i have active on this site. i have a lot of old usernames i don't remember the password to (from my old, old email address) that i feel should be purged because i don't use them/can't get into them? is there any way to verify they're mine so i can give you permission to purge them for others that may want those usernames in the future? i have several usernames that would be considered "popular" or "wanted" and i feel it's unfair for me to inadvertently be sitting on these just because i'm the dumb dumb who doesn't have access to them anymore. ugh.
  • Can anyone recommend a way to export journal entries and comments? I used ljArchive in the past, but it doesn't work on Mac.

I have several old RP accounts that have content in them that I don't want to lose, but I would gladly delete and purge them for someone else to use once the content was saved.
  • Feeds with 0 followers would be a good thing to purge -- I've added a few over the years that I've since stopped following for whatever reason, and I'm probably not the only one.
  • Personally I think the main parameters for account purging should be basically the same as they've always been, which from my understanding is: 2 years+ inactive, no upgraded account status, email sent out with a 1 week grace period to log in, then purged if no response.

If someone cares so little for their digital space that they can't be bothered to log in every year or so, or they don't check their email to see the email sent warning them, they don't need the account, and are simply hoarding the username.
  • personally, i think how you did it last time worked well. just log in, and you won't get purged.

i know there's a lot of hoarded names out there but that's going to happen. i've used a lot of rename tokens last year and got the names i did want.

i'm going through my list of journals and parting with the ones i don't want, rather than wait for them to get purged. i think it's also a good idea if you're not using the journal atm, to delete those 100 icons...
  • I think the way it was done last time worked well (2+ years inactive, log-in to save, etc.) I'll be going through my journals to decide what to keep and what cull, as well, so I don't have to worry about the content I want to keep.

Thank you for everything you do for us, by the way.
  • i agree with a lot of others here that people should be notified and have the opportunity to hold on to their journals if they'd like to. obviously there will be some cases of people holding on to empty ones, but i think that's far preferable than the alternative of taking journals from people without their knowledge. as always, thank you for looking for feedback and for keeping things running for all of us! i'm going through and deleting some of my old journals now, it's probably a drop in the bucket but hopefully it helps and others will do the same.
  • (no subject) - [info]
  • There needs to be a clear guideline that's public for everyone to see so they can save their journals if they'd like. If simply logging in saves your journal with no other action, that should be stated. If some journals are being snuck up on because people consider them "hoarded" that seems unfair, as people don't know the history behind them.
  • Can we make specific requests for certain users/comms to be preserved?

Specifically I hate going into a place like ~wikicon to get userpics and find that half the entries in the memories had been purged.
  • will the emails allow us to click a link to prove we still want the accounts, or will we have to make posts? i think the former is what happened last time but i don't quite remember
  • this isn't on topic at all, but i haven't seen it answered anywhere else. will the captcha's be fixed anytime soon?

thank you for all of your hard work squeaky. you do a great job of keeping this up and running for all of us and i imagine it's quite the thankless job
  • there are multiple accounts i have that i haven't received emails for in well over a year. is there a way to fix that prior to the purge occurring?
  • excuse the rp account but will old usernames that have been renamed to other things ever be purged? i hate looking for something that would be perfect and finding its only use now is redirecting to a totally different journal.

also, communities. will empty communities or communities with deleted/purged maintainers be purged? might be stupid questions both but idk how this usually goes.
  • is there a way to say, simply, don't purge this? i've roleplayed with people who are no longer active, who probably have changed their e-mails, maybe they don't care to keep what we wrote but i do.

their usernames aren't really coveted or special at all. i think, in a lot of cases, they'd stay purged and the memories would be gone. one journal i'm thinking of has a page of entries with thousands of comments.
  • When is this planned for and when should I be looking for emails? I do not actively RP anymore, but I often go back to old RP accounts for reference and information.
  • Slightly unrelated but, please tell me Insanejournal isn't at risk of closing? I understand that this has happened before, though I was not active on the site then, so I am just a little concerned. Thanks!
  • Kind of off topic, but I was wondering if there's a way for users to see if a journal is inactive or the last time it was logged into?
  • This may or may not be related to what is going on with the purge process at the moment, but I've noticed lately that in Neocities, which I use for directories of my rp characters, that images linked from IJ have not been showing up. Is this a known issue or part of this purge process that will resolve? Or should we be hosting icons elsewhere entirely from now on?
  • The end of the year marks 10 years since many of us came from GJ. We should commemorate that somehow.
