The process of dying and being brought back to life was like being hauled over broken glass by your ankles. The heart stops, the brain ceases to function and the clock ticks. Tick. Tick. Tick. Fifty-nine seconds turns into a minute, 118 seconds turns into two minutes, minutes bleed by and you're gasping for air while the people around swear that it was some kind of miracle. Miracle. Anamoly. Concept of time. Mistake. Accident. Whatever you choose to call it, the same fact would always remain. Him. Captain Jack Harkness was the only thing that was certain and untouched by time.
Jack liked tall places, he liked to stand there and watch the people below pass by. There was something to be said for man who liked to admire the lives of other people, who had watched them evolve into other species as they'd spread out across the stars. He knew what their futures were, he knew what their fate was and it was his job to make sure that they were safe from invasions and the stray spacecraft that came through the Cardiff Rift.
He shifted, his long gray coat blowing in the breeze and turned his face towards the sky. The sun had gone down and the glittering lights of Cardiff Bay greeted him as if greeting him. He looked down and pursed his lips, reaching up to touch his com, which was quiet. It had been a long few weeks and through their heartbreak at losing not only two members of their team, but two members of their family, they all had known they had a job to do. They carried on with their work, pushing through the pain and pushing through it all to continue their jobs for Queen and Country. At least that's what Ianto and Gwen liked to think, he was sure. He reached up and rubbed his nose before turning away from the edge of the Millennium Center and started towards the way he came.
And in the blink of an eye, he was no longer on the roof of the Millennium Center but in a mall. "What the ... "
