"Where am I?" El asked, holding the device she had been told was a 'cell phone' between her fingers as though it were a dirty rag. "And...how do I use this thing?"

She looked around at the new environment she had suddenly found herself in. "I'm...not even sure how I got here. Last thing I remember was hanging with my friends, and suddenly I got dragged to this place."

"Hello. Did the bus leave you without warning? I keep getting complaints that the new automated line seems to need bugfixing." Yvette noticed the phone, and blinked. "New here? Did you get a card and everything?"

"Bus? Uh...yeah, I guess. don't really remember a bus though."

El blinked in confusion when asked about a card and stuff. "Uh...I...I don't know. I guess I'm kinda new here. ᵂʰᵉʳᵉᵛᵉʳ ʰᵉʳᵉ ᶦˢ" She added as an afterthought. "Uh...what is this thing?" She asked, holding out the strange device.

"You're in Angel Grove. I'm on a lunch break, but would you be up for a short walk and an update as to what's going on?" Yvette juggled her paperwork to offer a hand. "Yvette. I'm not from here. Dimensional traveller, more or less, and now I'm stuck here. You probably had a similar thing happen to you."

"Yeah, I guess I could do with a short walk." El replied, slipping the...whatever it was into her pocket. She wasn't sure shat it was yet, but she got the sense it would come in handy.

"I'm Ele...um, Jane. Jane Byers. But I prefer El"

"El it is. People have a right to names they want to use. What pronouns do you like, just to cover the bases?" Yvette headed toward a nearby park. "As best I understand it, we have those phones, which let us call people, and visit the internet, and they can also teleport us to new places. The cards have money on them to get us started. Want some proof I'm not from here?"

"P...pronouns? I don't...I don't understand. What are pronouns?" El asked, getting more confused by the minute. She couldn't tell if this was just something she hadn't learned yet, or something that didn't exist back home. She wasn't even sure it was still 1985. "And...what's the internet? I'm so confused."

"Some places care if you want to be a guy or a girl or something in between, and linguistically, some languages are pretty pushy about using one or the other. It's okay if you don't have an opinion, but it's nice to ask." Yvette waved a hand. "And as to the internet, I can help with that. A friend of mine made some informational stuff for people from places that don't have the internet. We've had some people from - I suppose the Middle Ages would be a good analogy, so they were really confused."

"So...so people come here from different times in history? Does...does that mean I've travelled in time?"

El thought about the question on pronouns. "I...I don't know what my - what did you call them? pronouns? - are. What are the options?"

"Exactly. I'm from a few years back, but my country doesn't exist here." Yvette pointed to a bench. "If you want to sit here, I can show you how to get to that informational thing on your phone."

They had a nice view of a fountain and the cafes near it around here. "I use she and her, because I'm pretty comfortable with being called a woman, but some people use they and them because they'd sooner have a neutral pronoun. Where I'm from, you'd call someone a citizen until you knew what they'd prefer. It was a political statement to say that anyone you met deserved the rights that anyone else in your country should have, but here, it can be seen as impersonal."

El took a seat on the bench, processing the new information about pronouns. "Well, I guess I've always felt like a girl. But I've never really explored that. The idea that we could be anything other than the gender we were born as isn't really something that's even thought about, let alone talked about, where I come from."

"It's not super common where I'm from either, but I work with kids coming from rough places, so it comes up." Yvette dug out her phone and tapped the screen. "Here, let me show you how to get to this informational thing. It talks about how to be safe on the internet too."
