"Hey Axel?" Roxas was sitting on the ledge of a building while Axel stood next to him. The redhead looked down at him and made a non-committal sound in response. Roxas continued, "Do you... remember when you were somebody?"
"A little." he answered. Roxas nodded and drifted back into thoughtful silence. Axel looked at him for a while, but eventually his gaze wandered back to the horizon, dark clouds that always hung over the sky, perpetual twilight. He sighed, grunting as he settled down on the ledge at the same level as Roxas. "Why?"
"Mm. Just asking." the blond replied cryptically. Axel quirked an eyebrow at this, but shook his head. They sat in amicable silence for a long time, staring off into the purple depths of the sky, Kingdom Hearts looming overhead like an oddly shaped moon. Finally, Roxas broke the silence again, thinking aloud, "Do you remember what it's like to... love someone?"
Axel looked at Roxas for a long, long time, expression unreadable. He finally answered, "Yeah. I do." Looking up to Kingdom Hearts, he sighed quietly, "In fact, I think that's one feeling that's never left me, even now."
"What do you mean?"
"I... I'm pretty sure that I can still love." he looked at Roxas meaningfully.
"Do you... love me?" The younger ventured, genuinely curious. Something in his chest fluttered, catching in his throat in anticipation while he waited for the redhead's answer. Something that would undoubtedly shatter into a million irreparable pieces if he said 'no.' Axel blinked, noting the weight of the air around them had changed substantially.
"Yes." he finally admitted, both to himself and to the blond. "I love you, and I don't know how it's possible." Roxas would have said more, but it was at this moment that Axel began to lean in to him, placing a soft, gentle kiss on his lips. I love you. You know who you are.
