Edgar & Calypso VERSUS Rosalind
"We need to have dinner - just the two of us - more often," Calypso decided aloud, leaning back in her chair with a smile as she gazed across the table at her husband. She had one hand resting firmly on her stomach despite that there was not showing nor was there any way she could have either felt that full after dinner. "If we wait for news like this for an excuse, we're going to end up either never doing it again or having a lot of children."
She was joking, of course, but that didn't mean she didn't agree with the statement. The teasing tone that it was delivered in was touched by the pleased smile on her face, showing Edgar just how sincere she was being.
They were at a restaurant in Hogsmeade away from the main street, dimly lit with candlelight and that served lobster and steak at sky-high prices. It was nice, if a bit pretentious, but celebrating to Ed had always equated a good meal and dressing up fancy. He had his best suit and robes on, hair pulled back neatly. He could pass for a perfect, pureblood gentleman this evening, that was for certain. Edgar laughed, grinning widely. He still couldn't believe this. No, it wasn't ideal to bring another child into the mess of the world in which they were currently residing. And yes, Penelope was only eight months old. But Ed couldn't not be happy to know that he and Calypso were going to have another baby. That their family was growing. "I was thinking enough for a quidditch team, at the least," he said, failing to even fake a serious face. "And the reserve of course. Think you're up for that?"
Before Calypso had the opportunity to respond, a flash of silver came through the wall from the direction of the high street, stopping in goat form at Edgar and Calypso's table. Ed nearly jumped out of his skin, as did the few others dining that evening, and the waiter, who ended up pouring ice water all over some poor old woman's lap.
"Death Eater. Hog's Head. Need help now!" Aberforth's voice boomed in the small dining room.
"Shit," Edgar said, looking at Calypso apologetically. "I'm sorry--" but he was cut off by a woman near the window (the same woman with the lap full of ice water) screaming, "Something is on fire!"
"...on fire?" Calypso asked, her eyes wide as she leaned toward the window to see if she could see anything. She furrowed her brow, trying to process all of the things that happened very quickly. This was the sort of thing she was always secretly jealous of Edgar for being wrapped up in the middle of, but now she actually felt a flicker of fear. Not fear for what could happen to her, but fear for what might happen to whoever was out there.
Without warning, she jumped to her feet and looked down at Edgar. "We need to help," she said firmly, not caring that her hair had been put in that up-do rather meticulously and that she was wearing her finest robes. If anything, she was just pleased that she was wearing flats and not high heels.
Edgar blinked. "Cally," he said, standing as well, and quickly moving toward the door. The windows facing high street were lit up with what seemed to be a growing fire, flickering yellow and orange that illuminated the panes of glass in a frightening way. They made their way outside where they could see what was happening more clearly, and where they could also hear screaming and shouts of panic and fear. "Fucking... Cally, you need to get out of here." Still they were moving closer to the high street and to what was certainly a flaming Hog's Head; Edgar felt his heart beat speed up in his chest and he hoped to hell that Aberforth had managed to get out before it happened.
With wide eyes, Calypso very quickly agreed with Edgar. She gave half a glance at her husband before turning around, fully expecting the feeling she had grown used to that came with Apparating to take over. Her eyes were screwed shut, but she didn't need to open her eyes to realize that it didn't work. Swallowing once, she gave another glance around before trying again - only to open her eyes in the middle of Hogsmeade and not their sitting room.
"I - I can't," she said quite obviously, looking over at Edgar. "Edgar, what's going on?"
"Fuck," Edgar said, feeling his heart sink. This couldn't be happening. Calypso had no training dueling and Death Eaters were lighting up the whole bleeding village. Who knew how many of them there might be? "They must've set some kind of ward that prevents anyone from leaving the village. I hope people can still get here. This is. Shit. Shit. Okay, c'mon. Stay close to me and if anything happens, keep up a shield charm as much and as big as you can. Everyone in the Order should've gotten a patronus. More people should be showing up. We'll see what's on the high street and then you'll go and hide. Okay?" He was panicking now--he'd just found out that Calypso was only a few weeks along for shit's sake. Anything could jeopardize that. And if this was some massive attack intent on massacring Hogsmeade... anything could happen.
Calypso looked around warily, her hand plunging into her robes to find her wand and gripping tightly around the end as she inched closer and closer to Edgar. This was scary - really scary. She didn't know what to expect or where to look first and all she could think was what would happen if she forgot what the incantation was for a Shield Charm? She knew it right now, but what happened if she forgot as soon as she needed it? That might not have been positive thinking, though, and Merlin only knew how much of that she was in need of.
"Okay," she finally said, her voice sounding a bit weaker and frightened than she had intended for it to be. She was a strong woman and she prided herself in being one, but damn if this wasn't scary.
"Okay," Edgar echoed a little shakily, and they started moving toward the Hog's Head. He had to keep a clear head. He had to protect the both of them. He couldn't let anxiety and fear overtake him or he wouldn't be as strong as he knew he could be. She could cast a shield charm. She could throw out a few jinxes or hexes if she needed to. It would be okay. We're going to be okay, he chanted over and over again in his head. The fire at the Hog's Head had nearly enveloped the entire place, and the street was crawling with Death Eaters. "Buggering fuck," Edgar muttered, and then switched into dueling mode.
"Confringo!" he yelled at the nearest Death Eater, putting as much force as he could behind it. "Protego, Cally, here we go," he told Calypso, followed by a soft but vehement, "I love you."
"I love you," Calypso repeated his words, but then quickly followed it up by a strongly casted Shield Charm. It was good that he reminded her what the incantation was because she quickly felt herself panicking more and more, her heart pounding in her chest. She had always wanted to be a part of this and in the action, but she had always thought that should that opportunity would come she would have a chance to prepare. She had been wrong.
Among the Death Eaters surrounding the street in front of the Hog's Head, waiting for them, was Rosalind. She'd needed all her self-discipline not to be distracted throughout Narcissa's bridal shower, eager to get through it and get to this. Bringing down the resistance would be glorious, she had no doubt about it. And now that the seedy pub was on fire, it had begun. When a first couple came running, she recognised Edgar Bones, a known resistance member, and she didn't wait for any of her Death Eater colleagues to engage them. Eagerly, she walked a few steps ahead in their direction to engage them herself, claim this duel as hers. She first put up a shield to protect herself, deflecting their blasting curse, and then, thinking back on her training with Mr Rookwood the previous day, she silently fired a rapid string of curses at the couple. Expelliarmus, Confundo, Incendio. Wordless magic was one of her strengths; she'd begun training in wordless casting as soon as she'd took the Mark and begun spying for the Dark Lord. It gave her an advantage in duels, yes, but it was more than that for her: it was a necessity to ensure her cover. She could not afford for anyone to recognise her voice.
Edgar managed a shield charm of his own before the force of Rosalind's hexes hit him, causing him to stumble back slightly into Calypso. "Fuck," he muttered, managing to deflect them with some difficulty. "Confundo," he shouted, followed in succession by another blasting hex aimed at Rosalind's feet, then a silent defodio and the conjunctivitis curse.
As hew new mentor had noticed, Rosalind's defensive skills were her greatest strength. Blocking spoken spells gave her no trouble at all and she deflected both his confundus charm and blasting hex easily. The following blast of sound from his defodio shook her up and she lost her footing, stumbling to her right. Which was a good thing as the conjunctivitis curse flew right by her and would have hit her hadn't she stumbled. Her ears ringing, she knew that she was vulnerable and concentrated on holding her shield up. Wracking her shook up brain, she threw a new expelliarmus then a quick healing charm on herself. It was risky, but she knew it was better than waiting until it faded on its own.
She was angry now, truly angry, and she sent curse after hex after curse at them. The entrail-expelling curse, confringo, the body-bind curse, crucio...
Edgar conjured as strong a shield charm as he could manage, easily deflecting her expelliarmus, then took advantage of Rosalind healing herself to look around and see what was going on. There looked to be about three people there, then, counting himself, four with Calypso, and more death eaters than he could count. They were everywhere. "Buggering fuck," he said, taking a deep breath as he held the shield charm fast and cast a patronus to send to the Order so they would know that they needed every available body. His Labrador formed, he sent it off to everyone with the message, "Outnumbered! Trap! Hog's Head, need everyone!"
The shield held for the entrail-expelling curse, but the blasting hex broke it; Edgar deflected the body-bind with a whip of his wand, then pulled Calypso out of the way, the crucio crashing into the ground where they'd just been standing. "Expulso!" Edgar snapped, quickly losing patience. "Diffindio! Furnunculus!"
Calypso felt her heart pounding, her eyes wide with fear as she just plain tried to stay out of the way and away from all of this. The only thing she could think about was Evander and Penelope at home and then their unborn child she had found out about only a few days prior. She swallowed hard and her eyes jumped to Edgar when she recognized that he was losing patience for this and her mind frame went from frightened to angry.
Even though Edgar had told her to keep the Shield Charm up, she couldn't do it anymore. She let it fall, her jaw set angrily as she shouted out, "Diffindio! Confundo!"
Rosalind was disappointed to see them move just out of range of her cruciatus curse, but she didn't let it distract her. Strengthening her shield, she deflected Edgar's curses without much problem and moved on towards them, closing the distance they'd just put between them. Bones' wife - a Doge, if she remembered well, yes, Calypso - joined in the fight as well and Rosalind smiled, behind her mask, at the difference in strength between the spouses. She was tempted to taunt them, but her self-discipline ruled it out; it was more important that no one recognised her voice than to satisfy the urge to jeer at her opponents. Calypso was making it easy on her, dropping her shield like this, and Rosalind targeted her. Expelliarmus, Sectumsempra, Defodio. The last one was added to take care of Edgar as well, as the blast of sound from the gouging spell would hurt him just as much as her.
Edgar threw up another shield charm, large enough to protect the both of them, stopping the expelliarmus and sectumsempra. The sound emitted by the defodio caused him to falter, but he managed to throw it off, causing it to crash heavily into a nearby park bench, destroying it and the section of sidewalk beneath it.
"Furnunculus!" he said, whipping the hex toward Rosalind's lower body, followed quickly by two silent blasting hexes and a stunner.
"Diffindo!" Calypso echoed herself from before, then quickly put up a shield charm to at least cover herself, not knowing what else Edgar might be planning to do. She took a step in towards him, glancing just once over her shoulder before looking back at the Death Eater before them.
Rosalind's shield was strong and it held against Edgar's spoken and silent curses. She'd learned not to underestimate him, since they'd begun duelling, and wasn't surprise to see him cast spells wordlessly anymore. She was now reading his body language and wand movement to recognise which hex he was casting and was getting fairly good results, blocking hexes more easily when she knew which ones were coming. She threw a tripping jinx towards Calypso, which hit midair with her own severing charm, blocking them both. Rosalind didn't waste time, already casting Oppugno at the broken pieces of the park bench and sidewalk destroyed earlier by the deflected Defodio, sending them flying towards the couple and adding a flagrante curse to ensure that they would burn the Bones' skin.
"Fuck!" Edgar said at the sight of the debris, and, knowing that a shield charm could only do so much, he pushed Calypso out of the way of the worst of it before casting a freezing charm followed by a blasting hex. The pieces exploded everywhere, a good chuck of the sharper pieces hitting Edgar himself forcefully. Still, he thought, wincing as blood blossomed on his now ripped dress robes, better than getting smashed by a massive chunk of concrete. "Protego!" he said loudly, stopping the rest of the debris, waiting only a split second before hurling a silent confundo and deprimo in Rosalind's direction.
Calypso couldn't help but let out a half gasp and half scream as Edgar pushed her to the side, startled by the sudden jerk to the side. One of her hands splayed over her belly, even though she knew that not only did it offer no protection to their baby, but it wasn't as though there was anything really there to see.
Her shield charm protected her from most of the debris and she felt something scratch her cheek, but that was ignored when she got a look at her husband. She gasped again and her eyebrows furrowed as she set her jaw. "Furnunculus! Confundo!"
While they were fighting off the flying debris, Rosalind had put up a new shield to strengthen her protection. It blocked Calypso's boils hex as well as both of their confundus charms, but it wasn't enough to protect her from the heavy wind of Edgar's Deprimo and she stumbled.
Edgar took advantage of the pause to send off three blasting hexes, two on either side of Rosalind, and one in front of her. As the street exploded, Edgar reached for Calypso. "C'mon," he breathed, flushed, blood dripping down his face from where the flying debris had hit the top of his head. "Let's move."
Rosalind barely had regained her footing that the street exploded. She hastily put up a shield, but not before a piece of concrete hit her thigh, tearing through her Death Eater robes and grazing her skin. A cloud of concrete dust surrounded her, stopped by her shield but still blocking her view. She threw a few curses blindly, but by the time the cloud receded, they were gone. Frustrated, she scanned the street to spot them, but in vain. Giving up, she moved on to help other Death Eaters in their duels with members of the resistance.
Fabian VERSUS Alecto
Alecto had worn a rather nice set of robes to Narcissa's shower, but had also carried a small purse with her, magically enlarged to fit a second, more mundane set of robes, her mask, and of course, two small explosive potions. She knew there could be only a very small time delay between Narcissa's shower and the planned attack, so she changed quickly before apparating to Hogsmede.
She arrived just as the final ward was being removed from the Hog's Head, and noticed Bellatrix already beginning to burn it to the ground. Taking her cue, she threw one of her potions at the shop next to the Hog's Head. A resounding 'BOOM' tore through the town as the windows exploded outward and a small fire flared up inside. These weren't her usual explosive potions; they were a bit smaller because she was strapped for money and ingredients at the moment. But one good explosion, albeit small, would further draw out their prey. And it worked. A couple of panicked villagers began running out of the building, and Alecto took them down in turn as they crossed her path. And now the fun would begin.
Fabian had been home when he received Aberforth's patronus. It was an increasingly common occurance lately and Fabian was rather sick of it, really. But in this case, he was glad he was here, because this whole not being able to do anything thing wasn't good for him. He patted down his pockets and made sure he had his wand before he apparated with a loud pop.
He arrived just an explosion shook the ground under his feet and he turned to the nearest death eater. He thought there was a rather feminine look about the figure, but it was hard to tell with the robes, so he simply cast a swift shield charm and then a tripping hex at the Death Eaters feet. Of fucking course, this whole fucking place had to be bloody well crawling with them, and he couldn't very well see how much of the Order was here. Not enough,, was his final conclusion and he flicked his wand to throw a jelly-fingers curse at his opponent.
Alecto was standing in the middle of the street, sending off various hexes at the people who got in her way. One man was getting away from her, and she started to follow after him, but tripped on the street. At that same moment, her wand fell from her hands. Cursing loudly, she got up quickly and made an angry grab at her wand, but it slipped through her fingers yet again. "DAMMIT," she spat. Now was not the time to be fucking around. The street was chaos around her and she couldn't even hold her wand properly. She took a moment to calm herself down, and made a third attempt at her wand, using both hands, which barely stayed in her fingers long enough to cast the counter curse. Finally armed again, she cast a shield charm before spotting the prick that hexed her. Prewett Still furious about their last run in, Alecto sent a reductor curse at him followed quickly by an incendio, hoping one of them would hit.
Fabian couldn't help but be mildly amused as his opponent scrambled for their wand. It was an elementary sort of spell, really, but it was quite useful. Still, even he recognised that right now wasn't the time for jokes and games. They'd seen, after all, that Death Eaters could be serious business, and it would require him to be the same. The reductor curse rebounded off his shield, but before he had time to reinforce it, fire was licking at his only-just-healed arm and he swore loudly, shooting a jet of water out of his wand to put it out. His forearm stung and blistered and if he wasn't so used to burns and other fire-and-or-dragon related injuries, it would have been a slightly more crippling injury. As it was though, he could blow it off, for the most part - at least for now - and redouble his shield charm. With a quick wave of his wand, he cast a knee-reversal hex and a stinging jinx.
Alecto grinned as the incendio hit, but her happiness was cut short by a jinx colliding with her shield charm, weakening it enough to let in the stinging jinx. The pain did nothing but further irritate her. She began cursing loudly, and her temper was about to get out of control. With a slash of her wand, she sent another reductor curse at him before muttering the counter curse for the stinging jinx. Too angry to remember her shield charm, she screamed, "Defodio!"
Luckily - for Fabian anyway - the digging hex was somewhat deadened by his shield charm. Somewhat. And so, unluckily - for Fabian anyway - there was an unpleasant crack of lower ribs just from the force of the spell. He doubled over, the wind knocked out of him for a moment. All right. He was done playing nice. He too, had rather forgotten to reinforce his shield charm before he rattled off three curses in a row: "Confringo! Stupefy! Expulso!" There. One of those had to hit, really.
Alecto's temper was both a blessing and a curse while dueling. While it made her more reckless, it also heightened her reflexes. She heard him start to rattle off curses, and immediately jumped to the side, out of the way of the first two, but her left leg got caught by the third curse. There was a loud crack as her knee shattered. Pain tore through her lef and she collapsed to the ground, breathing heavily. She quickly cast a shield charm over herself before attempting to conjure a cast so that she could at least walk. There was no getting out of here, and she could not be crippled. It was a meager cast, but it would was good enough for the time being. Gritting her teeth, she stood, her left leg dragging slightly. "Crucio," she spat, focusing all her energy on the curse rather than the pain in her leg.
Fabian felt a rush of panic as he heard an unforgivable leave the lips of the death eater he was fighting. Nononononono was about all that was buzzing in his mind before he remembered that to not get hit with a curse, you usually had to do something. As fast as he could, he summoned a bit of flaming building and used it as a shield. The curse collided and exploded violently with the wood and though there were some cuts and splinters, Fabian was relatively unharmed and not-tortured. Which he deemed to be a good thing. With another flick of his wand, he lifted a similar piece of debris and hurled it at his opponent, followed by a disarming charm. He figured an injured leg meant decreased mobility. Hopefully.
When Prewett put the shield between himself and her cruciatus, Alecto screamed in frustration. She started another curse, but was cut off by a piece of debris colliding with her shield charm. The force knocked her to the ground, forcing the disarming charm to fly over her head. Taking cue from him, she flicked her wand and threw a piece of debris at him, hoping it would give her enough time to get up. Slowly coming to a standing position, Alecto flicked her wand once more, sending a nonverbal blasting curse his way.
Fabian swore, barely banishing the bit of debris away from him before the blasting hex hit him in the chest. He was thrown back several feet and landed flat on his back, no air in his lungs for a long moment. "Oh, fuck," he mumbled thickly, having felt at least another two ribs break. He swore again before remembering that he really ought to put a shield charm around himself (which he did) and then climbed slowly to his feet, trying to ignore the stabbing pain in his chest. "Diffino!" he cast, wincing as even that amount of air it took to say a spell made it hurt more. He followed it silently with another blasting hex.
Alecto was in the process of putting up another shield charm when she heard Prewett cast the severing charm. She quickly deflected it, but did not have time to deflect the blasting hex. She was thrown backwards, landing hard on her back and legs, causing further damage to her knee and knocking the wind out of her. Taking a minute, Alecto let out two long breaths before getting herself up into a crawling position and casting a shield charm over herself once more. After she was sure she wasn't defenseless, she sent three blasting hexes in a row towards Prewett, before hanging her head in pain. She stayed there, panting, trying to push through the pain before standing.
The first blasting hex was deflected by his shield charm, but the second blew him further away. Again, he was laid out on his back, several metres from where he'd been. When he looked up again, he was right in the shadow of another death eater and fucking hell, this was not his night.
Remus VERSUS Lucius
Remus had been eating dinner when Aberforth's patronus had arrived.
"Death Eater. Hog's Head. Need help now!"
"Shit!" he had exclaimed, abandoning his meal as he stood up and apparated straight to Hogsmeade, appearing in front of the Hog's Head. As he glanced around, it quickly became apparent that Death Eaters had surrounded the Hog's Head and Remus' heart sank. "Fuck." It was a trap and there wasn't anything he could do to stop it. He tried to apparate but quickly discovered that he couldn't and gripped his wand tighter.
Lucius lived for these sorts of missions. He was practically giddy, knowing that they could easily take the Order, as they were unprepared and trapped. With any luck the worst thing to come that day would be Narcissa's realization that her bridal shower had been a cover for the Death Eaters. Her anger would probably be more frightening then any curse these mudbloods and blood traitors could send at him. Leaning against the wall of an anonymous building across from the Hog's Head, he watched as the Order began to arrive. He couldn't help but to laugh in a way that was borderline hysterical at the way they tried to apparate. One caught his eye. Well he wasn't a complete idiot, seeing as he was masked and not making his identity common knowledge. It was no matter seeing as how by the time Lucius was done, if things went the way he wanted, who he was would only matter to the Obituary writers at the Prophet.
Lifting his wand, Lucius pushed himself off the wall and took a duel stance. Perhaps the practice at the Lestrange's home had come in handy, though he would never admit that he needed any sort of help. "Diffindo" He spoke, moving his wand in a slashing motion. Yes, a severed limb or two would slow him or her down considerably.
As Remus glanced around, he noticed someone in a white mask approaching him and tensed, raising his wand. The instant he saw a spell being sent in his direction, Remus threw up a shield and blocked it. He couldn't believe this was happening and while he didn't want anyone else in danger, he couldn't help but hope for back up to arrive soon. They needed help if they were to make it out of this. So far he could only see a couple of others from the Order. Thinking fast, he dropped the shield and said, "Expelliarmus!"
Lucius didn't have time to be properly disappointed that his severing curse had been deflected because the next thing he knew, the Order member was trying to disarm him and that just wouldn't do. He hadn't been prepared for such a simple spell and just barely had a time to throw up a shield before it reached him. He rolled is shoulders, keeping his shield up while taking a split second to compose himself. It wasn't long enough to look like a hesitation, but the space was there. "Incarcerous" he said, allowing the thick ropes to shoot out of his wand before shooting off a "Incendio!" Sure, the fire would burn off the ropes but not before burning the dueler.
Fuck! Remus thought as ropes shot towards him. Diving out of the way, he landed on heavily on the ground and grunted as he rolled over to face his attacker. The ropes flew past him and wrapped around one of the posts of the Hog's Head. Flames shot past, following the path of the ropes and Remus quickly cast an extinguishing spell to put out the flames, though he thought it was probably a waste of time given the way things seemed to be exploding. Still, he had to try. Casting a protection shield, Remus scrambled to his feet and silently cast Petrificus Totalus.
Perhaps Lucius had underestimated the abilities of the Order, because he had not expected them to be able to use silent spells so well. He only had time to physically dodge the Body-Bind Curse, which led to his his right leg, coincidentally his bad leg, to go completely rigid. "Fuck!" he muttered, taking up valuable to time to use the counter curse on his leg before facing his dueling partner. Of course, Remus couldn't have known that he had hit Lucius's bad leg, but he took it as a personal attack. His leg was his greatest physical weakness and to have the affected angered him more than anything else could. "Serpensortia!" he hissed, a black snake shooting out of his wand. The snake was large in length and width and hissed loudly. It could do damage, Lucius knew, but because of it's unpredictable nature, it could also turn on him. Lucius threw another incendio at the masked rebel but also had a banishing spell on the tip of his tongue for the snake.
Remus used the time that Lucius spent breaking the curse to regain his balance and deflected a curse that was thrown at him by someone else nearby. The next thing he knew, a fat black snake was slithering towards him and he braced himself, searching his mind to find the counter spell. Unable to find it as quickly as he thought he should, Remus began to sweat. But before he could panic, the snake suddenly reared back away from him, hissing furiously for a moment then shrank back from Remus, much to his relief. He knew exactly what was happening and while it was normally something that bothered him, this time he was grateful for it. Particularly as the snake then turned on the caster and began advancing on Lucius.
"The fuck?" Lucius grumbled, his eyes growing wide under his mask as the snake completely shrank back from Remus. What the hell was that about? He stumbled backward as the snake advanced toward him. If walking forward was hard on his now aching leg, then trying to run backward was even harder. He caught himself before he could fall and make himself an easy target for the snake. His knuckles were white around his wand, but he remained steady, refusing to show any signs of panic at his backfired attack. "Wingardium Leviosa" he said, the snake lifting off of the ground, stopping it's advance toward him. He called out a banishing spell and the snake was gone. Letting out a breath that he hadn't realized he was holding, Lucius composed himself. Seeing that his partner was now engaged with Greyback, he moved on to another Order idiot.
