PLATFORM COLLAPSES, 120 FEARED DEAD
Charity Burbage
An oil rig accommodation platform 235 miles east of Scottish city Dundee has collapsed, according to sources. The platform, containing mostly Norwegians, collapsed after a strong wave hit one of its legs, causing it to break and send more than 120 people into the North Sea. Fortunately, some were able to make it to lifeboats before the platform capsized in a mere fifteen minutes.
It is said that a previously undetected crack in one of the platform's leg was the reason that the mega structure gave way, killing more than 100 oil rig workers. Most of these were Norwegian, with some Britons and Americans on board there. It didn't take long for the platform, containing bedrooms and kitchens, to become bottom up in the sea.
Norwegian helicopters and RAF have been dispatched to the area of chaos along with local ships. More on the story as it comes.
NINE DEAD FOLLOWING ST. HELEN'S ERUPTION
Charity Burbage
At least nine people have died following the eruption of the Mount St Helen's volcano at approximately 08:32 yesterday. There are many missing and it is probable that the death toll shall rise in the coming few days. The volcano, which is in the American state of Washington, also triggered an earthquake that measured a 5.2 on the Richter scale. Also, the north face of the mountain suffered an avalanche.
Aftermath
As the nation grieves for the dead, including local celebrity Harry Truman (not to be confused with his namesake, President Harry Truman), the impact of this horrific eruption is not over yet. Strong winds have been blowing tons of ash across the United States of America as far as 250 miles away. Around 150 square miles of forest in the area has been destroyed and thousands of wild animals killed.
Dr. Bob Christiansen, of the US Geological Survey, predicted the huge eruption but does not think another major blast is likely.
