TWO DEAD IN ATTACK AGAINST MILLICENT BAGNOLD
Derwent Skirmish - DP London
LONDON - A witch and wizard are dead following a Death Eater attack on the home of Millicent Bagnold in the heart of muggle London last night, the Ministry of Magic reported early this morning. Bagnold's younger sister, Marion Twiling, and her brother-in-law, Patrick Twiling, were murdered in an attempt to take Bagnold's life. Bagnold survived, though she is reported as badly injured, and is currently being attended to at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies.
"This is a sad, sad, day," Minister for Magic, Otis Wilde, told reporters this morning. "This shows where wizarding tradition is really falling apart: At the hands of those too blind to see the redundancy of their actions." The Minister also issued his condolences to the Bagnold family and pledged his support to Millicent Bagnold's candidacy to take over for Wilde when he retires early next month. "This shows that what the Ministry needs is a woman like Bagnold--someone who can combat the forces working against peace. I am more than willing to offer her the position as soon as she is able, rather than forcing the wizarding community to suffer through the tediousness of a Wizengamot vote."
According to a statement released by the Ministry, Bagnold's home was invaded shortly after eight o'clock yesterday evening. A portion of the house was entirely destroyed, drawing the attention of Bagnold's muggle neighbors, who are currently being treated by Obliviators with memory modification spells. The Department of Magical Catastrophes is working on the clean-up. Muggle witnesses stated that they could see Bagnold dueling with the suspected Death Eater through her broken window, and that she put up a valiant fight.
Other mixed reports from muggle witnesses stated that a man arrived before Aurors and the Department of Magical Law Enforcement (DMLE) and intervened inside, forcing the suspected Death Eater to flee before they could be apprehended by authorities. "There was some yellow-haired fella in a cape," Bagnold's nearest muggle neighbor, Charles Oldman, told Aurors. "He ran right in there. Came bloody well out of thin air, he did. I think he scared us all more than the commotion inside."
The Ministry asks that if anyone has information regarding the attack that they contact the DMLE immediately.
"We want to catch these people and put them away," Bartemius Crouch Sr., head of the DMLE, told the Daily Prophet. "If you are not trained to do it, you shouldn't be throwing yourself into it, trying to play hero. That is how innocent people are killed. These criminals are trained in the Dark Arts. It isn't going to be like a spar in the Hogwart's Dueling Club."
Despite recent criticism for legalizing the use of unforgivable curses in the DMLE, Crouch recovered two of the missing halfblood and muggleborn wizards and witches that had disappeared since Otis Wilde announced his impending retirement. "We're doing our jobs," Crouch reiterated. "The [DMLE] is dedicated to putting an end to this senseless violence."
