Who: Benjy Fenwick
Where: Ministry of Magic, Werewolf Registry archives
When: Friday, 29 May; mid-day
What: Benjy makes a startling discovery about one Master Lupin
Rating: R, because Benjy says two words.
Status: Narrative, complete.
Just as he thought would happen, it was agreed that Benjy would become the primary Auror on Fenrir Greyback's file. With this, he could call in anyone that he deemed necessary when on it; he made a notation that Jugson, Savage, Johnson and Hit Wizard Gumboil had made an excellent team and that he'd pull them in on it again if it came down to it. And it would, he had no doubt.
But that was only the beginning. There was a connection between Lupin and Greyback; he just needed to find it. Fabian's question had been niggling at him all night as he tossed and turned. And now, finally, at mid-day, he was able to delve into the Werewolf Registry archives and start doing the research he needed to do in order to know his prey better.
His prey. Interesting choice of words, considering. He huffed softly at himself as he pulled open the drawer containing Greyback's registry file. There wasn't much in it that Greyback himself had told them; Benjy wasn't sure if the beast itself had ever actually registered. Most descriptions seemed to be of the eye-witness type. He frowned when he came to the part about "possible or known victims". It said, simply, "see related folders". Benjy looked down; the filing cabinets to the left and right of him seemed to be filled with information about other werewolves. But, on a table, there was a smaller one, with only two drawers. The top one said, simply, Coralis Warner, and a notation, deceased. The other one said Fenrir Greyback.
Benjy pulled open Greyback's drawer; it was filled with a thick folder detailing known victims. He shuffled through them, idly thinking that he should have Jugson and Savage go through them and cull out the ones who were still alive, when a name caught his attention. He paused, having for a moment forgotten about his purpose, to discover the link between Lupin and Greyback. But it seemed that he didn't need to really do so any longer.
Lupin. There was the name, plain as day. Lupin, R. The half-sheet gave the date of the attack and not much more information beyond that the victim hadn't been killed. Stomach sinking, he shut one folder and put it away and went back to the filing cabinets and pulling out the one marked Lu-Mi.
"Fuck," he said, pulling out a folder that undeniably had LUPIN, REMUS JOHN across the top in typewritten letters. Again, "Fuck."
He wasted no more time, opening the folder and reading over the contents quickly. It was all there, plain as day. Remus Lupin was a werewolf. Remus Lupin had been bitten by Fenrir Greyback when he was a child. This was the connection that Benjy had been looking for, and in all honesty it was the most surprising one he could find. And he had to tell Edgar. There was no way that he couldn't. Hell, the entirety of the Order had to know this, he thought. Who had thought it would be a good idea to keep this a secret? Who had thought that it would be a good idea to allow a dangerous beast to roam around without so much as a by-your-leave to the people who would have to work with him?
Frowning, Benjy put Lupin's folder back where it belonged and took up the two folders that belonged to Fenrir Greyback. He'd need copies of them both, if he were to do his job properly. And he would, of course, destroy his copy of the parchment detailing Remus Lupin as one of Greyback's victims. That was the sort of information that was too damned sensitive to even potentially fall into the hands of Death Eaters.
