His response, hesitant as it was, made Narcissa feel somewhat inconsiderate for questioning him. If he loved her as he said he did, what did it matter why he'd waited? He must have had his reasons. But she wasn't blind. She could see the uncertainty in his face as he gave her his reply. She looked down for a moment, giving him a second to compose himself. A moment later, she said softly, "It does not matter."
Because really, who was she to question him? She was his girlfriend, yes. His fiance, his soon-to-be wife, the mother of his child. That gave her many rights with him that others did not have, but she still believed that a woman played a very specific roll in a relationship. Certainly she would not hesitate to question him when it was important, but when it was something like this, somethat that was merely curiosity on her part that would only make him uncomfortable, she did not need to know. She believed that he loved her, and she believed that he was faithful to her. If he had his own reasons, ones he did not wish to discuss, she would not push.
"Your mother will be pleased. She likes me," Narcissa said calmly, relaxing into his touch. She loved the way he touched her, she loved the way his hands felt. She let her eyes fall shut again and tilted her face into his gentle touch.
Tea forgotten now, all of her attention was on Lucius as she slid closer, tilting her face up to his. She loved being the centre of his attention, she loved when he was focussed solely on her. One of her hands now slid up his chest, curling slightly into his robes.
"When should we announce it, Lucius?" she asked softly, though it was clear she was paying more attention to him than she was to any conversation they might still be having.
