It had been a long morning. Nature had pulled Nora from bed before dawn and, like the day before, she'd spent over an hour emptying the contents of her stomach in the loo. It took until noon for the world to stop spinning. After assuring her husband that she'd be all right, she walked into town to pick up a few things. With how she felt, she wouldn't have objected to him picking up the groceries, but there was one particular thing that she didn't want him to know she was getting.
The pregnancy test lay hidden in her pocket, and it felt heavier than it's actual weight while she waited for an opportunity. It wasn't that she didn't want to share this with Xeno. She was sure he would be just as excited about having a child as she would. But if Molly's guess was wrong... she didn't want to get his hopes up, just to have them shattered. So she waited, sure a time would come where she could take it without worrying about him walking in on her.
It came eventually. Xeno left to pick up something he needed to fix the printing press, and Nora pulled the packet from her pocket, and headed for the loo.
Waiting was the worst. In her mind, she alternated between planning for the nursery (she knew just the spot) and wondering what would happen if her husband returned and found her here. Keeping this from him was bad enough, but what if she really wasn't pregnant? She didn't like that train of thought, and so she considered what color she would paint the nursery.
Finally, the time had passed. Nora picked up the test. And then the instructions that had come with it. Her eyes skipped back and forth between the two items, as her mind refused to accept what she was seeing. She stared at the two for at least five minutes, practically willing the test to change, but nothing. She drew in a ragged breath, fighting off a sob as she gave in to the truth that was plain before her.
Negative.
