Edgar was downstairs, which was a nice change.
He was sitting on the sofa in the sitting room, Evander--a hyped-up whirling dervish as his Grandmother Bones had been over earlier in the day and had insisted on feeding him ice cream--spinning around the place, singing nonsense to himself. Penelope was between Edgar's feet, playing with blocks on the floor. Edgar himself was dozing off, head lolling back, drool attempting to escape from the corner of his mouth. Generally Ed looked a ton better. Most of the injuries Bellatrix and Sirius had inflicted on him had healed (the burns had been the more persistent), and he was very nearly completely bandage free. He could finally stop wearing pajamas and was back to his regular clothes (though he'd lost some weight during his time as an invalid, and they were a bit bigger on him than he liked), and he could walk something more than a shuffle. He was getting stronger. More back to normal. Though Ed wasn't sure if he'd ever really be the same person--mentally of physically--again.
Ed had settled in the sitting room to wait for Ted, with whom he was planning to spend most of the early evening, half-babysiting and listening to quidditch, while half discussing the Order. The fact that Ted wanted to know the truth about all this shite was one thing. Ed just wondered if maybe he might want to be part of it so well as aware of it.
"I made...biscuits!" Calypso announced as she entered the sitting room, Evander hardly even hesitating before beelining to his mother and jumping up and down in an effort to get one. She hardly paid the boy any mind, though, instead smiling to herself as she crossed the room toward Edgar, expertly dodging the boy that was inadvertantly trying to trip her up in exchange for a biscuit.
"Edgar, wake up," she instructed, dropping onto the sofa next to her husband. As soon as the plate was in reaching distance, Evander snatched one of the biscuits and took off before his mother could even think of scolding him. "I made biscuits and you need to wake up and appreciate them."
"Ajg jnk hu?" Edgar babbled, coming to slowly, blinking confusedly at his wife. He wiped the drool off of his face absently. "Biscuits?"
Ted had just apparated nearby and hurried over to knock on the door. Lately, it just seemed much safer to get inside someplace rather than stay out for too long. Of course he could have said no to stay safely at home, but he had wanted to go to Ed's. So he let his wife know where he was going to be and set the plans in stone. He could have used the break. It seemed like the atmosphere in the entire Ministry seemed so tense that even if there was no work to do, you'd still feel stressed.
He knocked and waited for a reply.
Ed had let the wards down earlier that day for his mother, and had left them that way for Ted. Neither he nor Cally were going to walk to the edge of the property to let anyone in, not at this point in the day, and while usually it was a "better safe than sorry" motto for the both of them, everybody needed a break from being paranoid and afraid to just try and remember what normality was. Ed grabbed a biscuit off of Calypso's plate and shoved it in his mouth, grabbing his wand with one hand and scooping Penelope up with the other and depositing her in her mother's lap. He stood and moved toward the door (which was heavily locked, at least), saying, "What nickname do I have for my daughter's godmother, Ted?" feigning concern, though Ed was really still half-awake.
"Dorkface," Ted replied with a smirk. "Now hurry and let me in. There's no way I'm missing any part of Quidditch."
"Well done, gold star," Ed answered, opening the door. "Beware. Ev's had sugar."
"I would be worried, personally," Calypso commented, holding a struggling Penelope in her arms and bouncing her once as she approached Ted to greet him. She smiled as she set the girl down, letting her waddle around at their feet. She had every plan in mind to retire in her office once she said hello to Ted, letting the two men have their Quidditch and babysitting while she was in another room. "We're starting to border on a whole new level of sugar high for Evander."
Someone else Apparated on the edge of the of the Bones' (down) wards right as the door closed behind Ted. Stu - for it was him - walked up to Ed's house, a paper bag in hand. He vaguely reeked of Murtlap Essence and a mixture of other ingredients which separately wouldn't smell bad, but together made for a rather... noticeable smell. He'd been helping Emmeline brew potions at the Leeds' safe house and, once they'd finished a batch of potion prescribed by Dig for Ed, he'd offered to bring it to him right away so that she could continue on more difficult potions where his participation would be more detrimental than helpful. He'd learned a lot since he'd begun giving her a hand with brewing the potions the Order needed, but he still had a lot to learn before he could pretend to be any good at it. It was a relief that Emmeline didn't mind that he wasn't all that good, laughing up at his error rather than frowning.
Bag in hand, he reached the door and knocked, glad for the chance to see how Ed was doing. He hadn't seen him in person since the Order meeting/potluck and his progress then had already been encouraging. Stu would never forget the horrible state in which Ed had first been, and it was especially good to see him get better.
Edgar stopped. They weren't expecting anyone else. His grip tightened slightly on his wand.
"Who's there?" he asked sharply.
"Stu Podmore, I've got your new batch of pain potion."
"What was the surname you and Alice had when you bought the second house?" Ed asked, slightly reassured, but still wary.
Stu smiled at the question, glad that Ed was careful. "Price. Celia and Michael Price, at your service." He'd been surprised to notice that the Bones' wards were down, when he'd Apparated, and he thought he should probably mention it to them.
Before opening the door and letting Stu inside, Ed probably should have taken a moment to bring the wards back up. But his daughter reached her little arms up toward him and said something that could be possibly understood as 'up', and he allowed himself to be distracted. He introduced Sturgis to Ted, pulled his little girl into his arms and started bouncing her. Shutting the door again and closing out the night, Ed could not have anticipated what was coming.
The week had gone from bad to worse, save for that one bright spot in the middle when Rodolphus had put her in charge of taking out the Bones family, and Severus had brilliantly discovered the missing link to her new explosive potion. This assignment was a simple order earlier in the week, and Alecto was eager to show that she was useful after all. But now, Rabbit was missing, and this assignment was about revenge.
Alecto apparated just outside the edge of the property with Lucius, Severus, and Danny. They were all masked and cloaked, wands ready, and of course, Alecto had her explosive potions. She didn't bring the new one; she was still not as confident with it. Besides, there were enough ways to blow up a house without a temperamental new potion.
She walked up to the property line and tested the wards, only to find that they were down. It couldn't be that easy. She tested once more, confused that they would not have their wards up. Again, nothing. She gave a grin and spoke to the men behind her. "No wards. These fools really are overconfident. Let's go." With that she began her approach, and when she reached the house, she sent a fireball at the top floor of the house. Better just start small. Give the men time to play.
Work was stressful, as usual, not to mention the fact that his parents still hadn't moved out of the house and he was thinking more and more about the idea of him being a father as Narcissa's due date grew nearer. They had decided on a name. Draco Scorpius Malfoy. It all seem too real and he wondered where, exactly the time had gone. This was just what he needed to relax, especially if Edgar Bones ended up dead. He had taken a part in the kidnapping of Narcissa and Lucius' own personal mission was to make sure that every single person that had laid a hand on his wife and unborn son would end up dead by his hands. His mask was in place, wand at the ready.
He shook his head, hearing Alecto say that there were no wards. "Idiots." he muttered under his breath, following Alecto's movement toward the unprotected house. She started the action, sending the fireball at the top floor, but Lucius soon followed, sending a slightly larger ball of fire straight at the front door. It would do to have them escape the easy way.
Quite glad he'd actually made a positive input for once, with Alecto's remote detonations of potions with the Protean charm, Severus was in quite high spirits. Perhaps if this mission went the way they wanted it, he would get back into the Dark Lord's good books. Surely enough, the incident with the Marchwood family was a while back now, but the Dark Lord wasn't exactly one to forgive and forget now was he? As much as it looked like they were going to succeed - two fireballs had been sent, declaring sudden war - Severus had learnt never to speak too soon. Optimism didn't fit him any how. He glanced at his fellow Death Eaters before taking some sort of inaudible cue.
Severus swung his wand around a few times, quite slowly, before sending what energy had gathered in the meantime straight towards the downstairs of the home. It was an electric blue trail of energy and it was taking out their windows and walls. It wasn't the devastating kind of spell though, if it had have been, the upstairs would've caved right in on the ground floor and that would have been no fun and over all too quickly. He got the impression Alecto wanted a bit of time to show off and who was he to deny her that? She needed some kind of saving grace within the ranks. Instead, it just left a gaping long line of nothingness in the wall and he certainly didn't appreciate their tastes in interior design.
Everything had finally come to a head -- Danny was mentally overwhelmed with all the troubles that had surrounded him and now it was all about to explode. His anger had overcome him and he would make these bastards suffer his wrath. He apparated just shortly after the others and stayed towards the back of the group, keeping an eye out for anyone who may arrive to find them here. With his wand already drawn and at the ready, he followed the others towards the house, glancing left and right as they moved in closer. While Alecto, Lucius and Severus all seemed to take care of the front of the house, he decided that the back of the house would need to be devoid of a safe and quick exit.
He stepped up beside Alecto, pointed to himself then pointed towards the opposite side of the house. Without gaining her approval, he took off into the darkness and ran to the back end of the home. Once he had made it to the backyard, he stopped and gave the place a quick glance over. Gritting his teeth he suddenly waved his arm in an upward diagonal motion as though striking someone with the back of his hand. The motion alone was violent and dangerous as he threw a cursed fire spell towards the house with intense anger. The stream of fiery fury blazed through the air and when it made contact with the door, the flames quickly burst and spread throughout the back downstairs wall, now ensuring there would be no escape from this house. And as he watched, a wicked smile slowly crept across his face.
Penelope was yanking on Ed's hair when he felt the sudden and unexpected surge of magic before it crashed through the upper floor and through the front door they were all still standing in front of. "Something's wrong," he managed, a sense of foreboding creeping up his spine as he thought of the wards. Before he could make any sort of motion toward setting them back up, Alecto's first attack crashed through the top of the house, causing the whole thing to shake. Edgar's eyes went wide at the sound--the crunching, crackling and sudden roar that was going to devour them all--and handed Penelope off to Calypso long enough to scoop Evander up. Physically, Edgar wasn't ready for this. He could feel Evander's weight tugging at his more stubborn wounds from the fight with Bellatrix and Sirius. He sincerely hoped, at the moment, that it wasn't her who had come with the intention of finishing him off. Still, a three-year-old as opposed to a ten-month-old would be a great deal more strain on a pregnant woman. "We have to move," Ed said, pulling Calypso away from the door and toward the kitchen gesturing to Ted and Stu to follow just as Lucius' fireball barreled through the foyer, splitting a line down through the living room between Edgar, Cally and the children, and Ted and Sturgis. It was then that Severus' electric light crashed in through the windows, hitting off the mirrors and walls.
"Oh fucking fuck!" Edgar managed, smoke starting to fill the sitting room as Lucius' fire engulfed the carpet and started growing. The children were screaming. Ed heard Danny's own creation rip through the back porch and kitchen, and for a moment felt his heart sink to his knees. How could they apparated out in this? There were too many distractions and not enough space. They had to... it was fight it or be fucked, Ed supposed. Shifting Evander (who had buried his face in the crook of his father's neck and was holding on for dear life) Edgar conjured as massive an aguamenti as he could manage, wielding it over the fiery dividing line between he and Calypso and the other two men.
Calypso held Penelope closer to her, trying to shelter the girl's face in her shoulder as she heard her start to cough in the smoke. This was not good - not good at all. She could hardly believe that only a few minutes prior, she had every intention to go upstairs and work on her book. Her book that she suddenly realized was probably about to go up in flames. A sharp pang went through her, but she knew that that wasn't the important thing right now. The important thing was in her arms, crying as she coughed against the smoke.
Glancing over at Edgar, she saw what he was doing. Bouncing Penelope once, Calypso pulled out her wand and followed suit. There was so much fire, though, and her eyes were starting to water against the smoke. She wanted to know how Evander was and she wanted to tell both of them that it was going to be okay, but all she could do was try to put as much fire out as possible with the water spouting from her wand and pray to someone out there that they would get out alive.
Somewhere in the back of his mind, Ted was extremely thankful he had decided against bringing Dora with him. At the same time, he thought of what would become of Andie and Dora if he didn't make it out of this. Quiet, he told himself. This wasn't the time to think of what-ifs. It was a time to react. When the blasts first hit the house, Ted's heart practically leaped into his throat as they followed Ed and Calypso to the kitchen. When he found themselves divided, he cursed under his breath and pulled out his wand. Damnit. He was probably in a far better condition than either of the parents yet they ended up separated. He decided to do as Edgar and Calypso and started taking out the fire. He dipped his head low so it wouldn't get caught in the smoke. But the smoke was already far too immense that he was coughing already and could barely see what was going on.
Was it Bellatrix? Finishing off what she started with Edgar while at the same time taking out the reason her sister betrayed the Black family?
Stu swore when the attack began, cursing himself for not warning Ed about his wards immediately when he'd arrived. Bloody Death Eaters had no honour, he always knew it, but this new proof angered him as he watched the Boneses' children terrified in their parents' arms. Ed was in no shape to hold his son like this, but before he could come and relieve him, they were separated by a line of fire crossing the room. He felt fire lick his arm and swore under his breath, keeping on casting Aguamenti around Ted and him. When they got out of here, he would be the first to help to work on the pocket Portkeys, he promised himself, wishing they already had them now. Looking at the man next to him, he knew that whether Ted was in the Order or not didn't matter now, he had to bring him along with him. He was caught in this now and there was no way Stu could leave him behind, wondering where all the others had gone.
"Ted," he called to get the other man's attention, "get a hold of me and keep on putting out the fire around us. I'll Apparate us out of here." He needed all his concentration to Apparate them out and could not do both that and put the fire out at the same time. Before Ted could answer, Stu noticed a dog whining and trying to cross through the fire to reach her master. "Damnit," he muttered, casting a quick charm to drag the Labrador to her feet and get a hold of her before she could run off to try to join her masters again.
Ted could really not handle the smoke longer and he felt his charm starting to weaken when he had a fit of coughs. He nearly fell on his knees to the ground but he managed to keep himself up as he reached over to grab at Stu's arm. It didn't matter how well he knew him and whatnot. He needed to get out of there before he took in too much inhalation. Both of them did. But at the same time he was also trying to squint through the air for Ed and Calypso. "We can't leave them!" he shouted, but he didn't let go.
"Go!" Edgar called through the thick of smoke, coughing heavily and wincing at Evander's weight on his unprepared body. When he saw Elliot come out of the office, Ed very nearly had a panic attack, having forgotten the poor animal in how quickly everything had went to hell in a handbasket. His ability to maintain the water charm at any length was beginning to fail--Edgar knew they had to take their chances and get out before the smoke inhalation killed them, or they burned to death. "Leeds," he said to Cally, knowing that Marlene was staying at the second safehouse, wrapping his arms tightly around Evander's now trembling form.
Calypso's water charm was starting to sputter into nothing at all, which meant that it was seriously time to go. She also thought that might mean she ought not be Apparating, but there was no choice. There was nowhere to go and Penelope was crying and coughing, both of which were simultaneously breaking her heart during her own coughing. Knowing that there was nothing else she could do, she tightened her grip around her daughter, squinted her eyes tight, and concentrated on appearing at the Leeds safehouse. Edgar and Evander followed suite.
The air was filled with smoke and it was getting extremely difficult to breathe, not to mention burning hot. Stu was about to reply to Ted when Ed encouraged them to go. Still, he justified quickly, "They've already got the kids. They'll follow us." Then, as soon as Ted got hold of his arm, Stu didn't waste any more time and, holding tight on the dog, he Apparated all three of them out and to the safehouse in Leeds where both Marlene and Emmeline would be able to help them.
Ted had no idea where he was being taken. The smoke had already clouded his senses and the apparating didn't help clear it up either. When they landed, Ted collapsed onto the floor, coughing some more. No more smoke and fire in this room, thankfully. But he couldn't get a full glimpse of his whereabouts because the second his coughing fit subsided, he blacked out.
The house was burning brilliantly against the twilight sky. Alecto's eyes were blazing just like the house, her need for revenge reflected there. Windows had exploded outward in a shower of glass, sparkling as they rained down on the ground. The men were doing a lovely job of taking the place down, and she could hear shouting and screams from inside. Good, let them burn. She saw quick bursts of water coming out of the windows, and she scoffed. No amount of augamenti charms would save them now. And of course, they couldn't be allowed to apparate just yet, not while there was still fun to be had. She moved closer to the house, and took out her explosive potions. She lit both vials at the same time and with a careful aim, she threw them through a busted out window, hoping that they landed at someone's feet. All the water in the world wouldn't save them from the explosives.
Lucius couldn't help but to smile at the burning house. There was a certain kind of beauty in the discord and destruction before him, especially when he'd had a hand in creating it. He held back a laugh at their feeble attempts at saving themselves. He hoped they burned, all of them. He had little care for the children or whoever else might have been in the house. Edgar had threatened his child, and turnabout is fair play. With a smirk set firmly on his face under his mask he raised his wand again, and sent a blasting hex where he estimated where the first and second floor met. His aim was to have the top of the house collapse in on the first floor, but any amount of damage would be satisfying. Even so, he threw another blast hex right next to his first for good measure.
It all seemed so quick and so surprisingly easy. Severus was still cautious though, an unsettling trait he'd developed while doing various tasks for the Dark Lord. It was never over until there was some kind of concrete evidence. Severus liked evidence and practicality and lists and efficiency. Theoretically, they could have apparated while in the house, but it would have taken a hell of a lot of magic accompanied by a hell of a lot of concentration to do so. Could they be able to pull such a thing off? They had certainly ticked the box titled 'Element of Surprise', that was for sure. Either way, the building was well on its way to collapsing, and Severus deducted that it needed near to no help at all. With all of his anger and rage channelled into his wand, Severus sent up a very large Dark Mark. It burnt magnificently, but his sentimentality and effort to make the mark burn brighter than usual, made sure that the Mark would not burn for as long as one usually would.
Danny, like the others, stood back to survey their handy work. The house was a brilliant blaze, lighting up the sky and the surrounding scenery. It was almost beautiful the way the flames rose up into the air engulfing the house as the wood gently crackled while windows randomly exploded without warning, sending shards of shattered glass to rain down onto the ground. As the fire grew, the heat slowly intensified, radiating over him feeling like he was standing right next to the sun itself. Smoke billowed from every crevice, pouring out into the sky and filling his nostrils with the smell of torched wood. He closed his eyes for a brief moment and leaned his head back to inhale the sweet smell of revenge, to feel the warmth of victory and hear the sounds of fright in their screams. Soon the sounds of actual explosions brought him back. His eyes shot open and he turned away from the house, shielding his head with his left arm as Alecto's explosive vials blew up; first one then the other. Just as he looked up at the house again, he noticed the Dark Mark gradually forming itself into the night sky above him. It was then that he took off running, rounding the side of the house to meet up with his fellow Death Eaters at the front. He stopped near the others and looked at the three of them standing there. He let out a high pitched whistle to get their attention then motioned to them to go.
