Hermione gave Narcissa a tentative smile when she thanked her. Was she just being polite or was Hermione actually being some help to her? She just really wasn't sure.
It was nice to see Narcissa light up like that, even if it was about Draco. Even though Hermione had mostly gotten over what had passed between them at Hogwarts, there was a sliver of lingering hostility she felt that she wasn't sure would ever go away. "That's good to hear," she said even as she pondered the irony of Draco practicing law after being, at least somewhat, involved in sedition in aiding the Dark Lord.
It surprised her when Narcissa didn't say any more about her son. Then a thought struck her; a rather unpleasant one. For all her little thoughts about Narcissa that afternoon, they would never be. Hermione was young enough to be her daughter!
Sheepishly, she returned to looking through flowers.
