Penny’s heart jumped as she heard a knock at the door. Smoothing her dress and checking herself in the mirror, she went over to the door of the log cabin. Opening it, she saw just who she was anxious to see. Smiling, in a much less reserved fashion than normal, she held her hand out to Jessica to invite her to step over the threshold.
“Hello,” she greeted her warmly. “How was your trip?” Pulling her close, she slid her arms around Jessica’s waist. Leaning in, she gave her a soft, yearning kiss that did a little to ease her nervousness about spending the week together.
“I am so happy you are here,” Penny admitted a little shyly.
They had been so patient about waiting to take the next step in their relationship, Penny knew that this week would be the time they would surely take that step or chose never to take it. However, she was so smitten, she knew that she was ready even if she was nervous.
“Orla sent a long a letter for you,” Penny said with a smile, glad that her daughter seemed to take to Jessica so well. “She made me promise not to read it though.” Penny chuckled.
The smell of dinner filled the cabin; roasting chicken, au grautin potatoes, green beans and an apple pie mixed with the natural smells of the cabin.
