"I didn't expect it to," Julia told her in a cool and detached tone. She was trying to come to grips with the idea that Claire would soon be gone. "I was just telling you how I feel. Be honest, is there anything I could do that would be enough?" Jules felt like she already knew the answer.
Julia winced. "Yes," she conceded.
