"Yeah," Adam confirmed quickly. "Sounds boring where you come from. Too much fire and brimstone in your tropical locale?"
Glad to be in the vehicle and on their way, Adam wanted to get this mission over with. He had too much supernatural crap to deal with lately. It would be nice to have flesh and blood human enemies again. Snorting in derision as Danica gasped and jumped up, the alien was pretty clueless.
"Don't get all excited. I can't feel anything through this armor. The seatbelt will keep you restrained to the vehicle in case of any accident," Adam explained. "Yes, we are moving. We are on a elevator that is taking us up to the surface. We are moving at night so that you won't need to let your eyes adjust and in the hopes that we won't be seen coming."
The elevator came to a jarring stop finally. Neither Adam nor Carter moved to take the seatbelt off of Danica. The wall before them began to slide away, revealing the interior of a vehicle repair garage. The driver immediately put the petal to the metal, the tires screeching as the Humvee tore out of the elevator. The smell of burnt rubber filled the air but none of the soldiers noticed. Their armor filtered out most smells. There were two other Humvees waiting outside on the street. One of those two took the lead as the other fell in behind them.
The street was lined with smashed and abandoned cars, with the buildings lining the street having seen better days. Windows and doors were smashed, and some buildings had been partially demolished. Through the debris the three Humvees sped as fast as they could, the night sky of stars visible above them in fleeting glimpses out the windows between buildings.
