Tracey flinched as Sara began to call her names. Each word was like a slap across the face. “I never wanted to come out,” she choked. Sara had been the one to teach her that. What they had, what Tracey had with any girl, needed to stay hidden for everyone’s sake; especially her own. “Is the same thing going to happen to you?” she accused, knowing what was in store for Sara if Daphne showed people the crystal.
Backing up, she was surprised by Sara’s sudden aggression. Tracey wanted to believe her, she actually never wanted to think that Sara could do that to her. But, all the signs pointed to that. “I don’t want to hit you,” she said, her eyes welling up.
“Like that?” Tracey choked out. “You hurt me plenty of other ways…” Why couldn’t Sara see how easy it was to jump to that conclusion?
“You what?” she asked, practically floored by what Sara said to her. “You love me? It seemed so outlandish. At the mere hint of Tracey saying that to her, Sara had been incredibly cruel.
“How can you say that to me? Especially now?” Tracey brushed past Sara to go stand in the center of the room. “I…I…was ready to tell you that. I know you knew and…what you said to me and how you treated me…” She had to brush back a tear that had rolled down her cheek. “If you loved me, you never would have treated me like that…”
She heard that it was Lavender Brown, but Tracey couldn’t concentrate on that at the moment…
