"No." Heidi responded quickly, but not too quickly. Even though she felt, sometimes more often than others, like she needed a drink, she wasn't going to break the promise she made to Tracey. "I haven't had a drink since I gave you my word I wouldn't." And Heidi never went back on her work. "Just...the way the air around us felt, made me feel like that. Like I was...under a spell, or something."
Heidi smiled weakly when Tracey didn't resist her touch this time. She let the tears continue down her face. "Then do. Believe me. I've never lied to you and I never will." She hadn't lied. She told her about Ginny, she told her about her drinking, despite denying how serious the problem was at first.
"I..." Heidi sighed and shifted on her feet. Why had she kept them? She had known she should have thrown them away, she had even come close to doing it more than once, but something always stopped her. "I don't know. But I will. Right now, if you want." She was more than willing to do anything to make whatever amends she needed to to Tracey.
