“People always wish to elevate their standing. The best way to do that is to tear someone down instead of building one’s self up,” Clara replied. “There is also some enjoyment that can be taken by some in seeing someone slip in standing. There is also the distraction value. If everyone is talking about someone else, that person is free to do things other might not approve of or might want to impede with less fear of being discovered.”
“Everyone has things to hide,” Clara answered mysteriously.
