Rating: PG-13
"What happened?" Albus looked up as Rose approached him. Where were they? The White Horse pub. Actually this was Rose's idea, he was keen on going home, showering and laying in bed but Rose had spoke to him and gotten him to meet her at the pub, of course with the promise of whatever was bought, she'd pay for. So that meant her painting? Yeah she wasn't going to get that any time soon, but that was okay. Family came first and Rose and Albus were close in age and had always hung out together while in school, in fact they used to be extremely close. They were still close now but it was a much tighter pack back when they were in Hogwarts.
"What you mean, what happened? I'm sure the bloody bastard has been talking about it enough for everyone to know by now." Albus spoke bitterly to his cousin. Rose sighed, shaking her head. "No one has said anything about the fight or the arrest... or to me anyway." She spoke softly.
"No, I'm sure they're waiting to see my face in public." Rose took a look over his face, he looked pretty much unscathed aside from a bruise coming out against the side of his face from where his temple was.
"You don't even look that beat up." Albus glared at Rose for a moment before reaching out and snatching her wrist, pulling her hand against his head so that her fingers went between the strands of his hair. Feeling something rather horrible, she ripped her hand back and stared at him. "Stitches." Albus said, settling back down in his chair, raising a beer he had ordered earlier to his lips and took a drink. "Ten of them to be exact." He sat the bottle down, his hand white from squeezing the brown glass to show his agitation.
"Well Albus, every dog has his day. You just didn't have what it took, that's al-"
"HE CHEATED!" Rose was interrupted from her sentence, her eyes wide as Albus snapped at her. Slowly she gave a rough swallow and attempted again with talking, asking how he cheated. "He used magic and not only that, he grabbed my legs like a bloody coward he was. This," Albus said, pointing to his head. "I did myself. My hand slipped when I was trying to keep my balance."
"Maybe it was best that he cheated, Albus." Oh that glare. "No, stop and listen. If he hadn't cheated and caused you to be knocked silly, how would this have turned out? Albus you were very aggressive. From what I heard, you were beyond reasoning with because you were so angry. You not only attacked Dorian but you were threatening everyone around you as well. Things could have gotten worse, what if you seriously hurt Dorian?" Why did she give a fuck about Dorian? "I don't... Well... I don't want anything bad to happen to him but he isn't my concern, you are. You could have wound up in Azkaban." When Albus didn't say anything, she sighed. "It could have been a lot worse, Albus. You could have lost more than your job."
"I didn't." Albus said, picking up his beer again,
"Didn't want?"
"Didn't lose my job." He looked over at Rose. "Dad was livid, he and mum came down with my boss."
"How did Aunt Ginny take it?" Albus smirked.
"They double locked my cell for my protection." Albus answered. "They talked to me, tried to have this unneeded therapy session and said that I was stupid for quitting, even though I did so they couldn't fire me. Oh and I was stupid for everything else especially with what I have going on, blah blah blah..."
"Well..." Rose asked. "What happened?"
Albus took another drink of his beer. "I'm on administrated leave for a week to straighten myself out, then I come back I'm doing paperwork for a month and I'm on job probation for six months."
"Well that's not too bad." Albus cut Rose off with a laugh.
"I'll end up losing my job, anyway. I have people out there willing to break their necks to ruin my life."
"Oh come on, like who?"
"Like Corrie."
"What has she done, Albus? Besides disagree with you. You act like it's a sin or something."
"It is." Albus said.
"Why is that?"
"Because I'm right." He went to take another drink but Rose snatched the bottle from him.
"So all of this nonsense, all the people you are hurting is because of someone disagreeing with you? Are you serious?" Albus snatched the bottle back from Rose.
"No the fight was because he called my unborn kid a bastard."
"Okay, regardless of the definition, I can see why you'd be upset. But what did Corrie do? Hell what did Ken do? Ken has done nothing but try to be a mate to you and considering everything you do, he's tried his best."
"Me and Ken don't see eye to eye."
"And that is why you're willing to ruin a friendship?"
"No, if Jackie Chan hadn't threatened me, we'd still be mates." Rose lightly slapped Albus over his injury that he had chosen to have it tended to the muggle way, from fear of his head falling off because of a spell gone wrong. It got the job done, Albus was in discomfort.
"Don't disrespect my mate." Rose said in a strict tone. "I've seen you destroy friendships for no reason. I've watched you and Lucy go at it," She and Lucy shared words too? "Of course we do, we're family. But there's us not seeing eye to eye and making a few remarks and then there's you actually tearing her down. What about Rox? I've seen you attack Roxanne like she's nothing and I can't think of one thing she's ever done to out of the way to you. You act like an idiot and she's still there offering her time and assistance and you don't even seem to appreciate her." It's her job, it's what she's paid to do? "Oh so you got into your job not wanting any appreciation from people you save?" Albus laughed, stating if he just wanted appreciation and thanks, he would be doing it for free.
"You're impossible," Rose said. "You're really impossible. You have so much going for you. You have a girl who, although is able to put her foot down, puts up with SO MUCH for you. She's having your baby. You did something that would get someone fired and yet you get another chance. You're getting the house of your dreams. You hang around with ignorant people, myself included because no matter what you do, no matter how mad we get, we're still beside you. You are lucky and you don't even care, you don't appreciate anything. Why??" Albus didn't say anything, he just kept staring at the table.
"You don't like getting together unless it's here,"
"You invited me out here," Albus told her.
"Yeah because you won't go anywhere else." Rose snapped. "You don't like getting together for holidays, you don't like birthdays, you don't like doing what a normal person does. Why? I know you had a brilliant life with Uncle Harry and Aunt Ginny. You just never use to be like this, so hurtful. What's wrong with you?" Rose waited, tears of frustration in her eyes but Albus didn't talk, instead he just ordered another drink and told the waitress serving him he was waiting for his pool table to be cleared, he only played at one table and it was occupied right now. Typically they didn't allow anyone to play at the table besides Albus but he had been away for a few days so they began allowing people access.
"So is this what you're going to do, then? Ignore the problem and wonder why you have no friends left when they're gone?"
"I have who I need."
"And who is that, Albus?" Scorpius and Shay? "Do you really think Shaylyn is going to want the baby to grow up around you like this? Shay may have stayed around after your fall out but it was just her making that decision for her, I know Shay enough to know she's not going to make the same decision when an innocent baby can suffer from it."
"Then that's her decision." Albus said, he didn't mean it but you couldn't judge by his voice that he didn't. Growling in frustration, Rose stood up, going through her purse for money to put down. "Where are you going?"
"I'm going to leave you to do what you do best, drink yourself stupid while I go and do what I do best along with Shay, apologizing for you even though you don't deserve it because you're a git." Rose set the money down and put the strap up over her arm.
"I hate this.." Rose stopped in her tracks, looking over Albus.
"What? What do you hate?" Albus stopped talking but it was enough for Rose to take her seat again. She looked over Albus' face and seen a crack where there was some emotion to where earlier upon looking at him, his face didn't hold anything. Her hand reached out, resting over his. "Albus I'm not going to laugh or say anything." She promised.
"I try..." Rose shook her head, asking what. "I wanted to be this person who lived in glroy. Like my dad. I worked hard, you know? I didn't become an auror but I'm close. But I'm not him. James.. His life is... I know it can't be all that perfect, but it is. He's made his own way, he's made his own name. I hate the show but he's a good actor, so not only do I have my parents legacy to live up to, I have to be good, like James. Lily... She's young and does so much with herself. She's the baby of the family, has everyone behind her, but she never really falls back on them you know? She can take care of herself. People rely on her to do her job."
"Albus people rely on you as well and no one expects you to be anyone but yourself." Albus shook his head.
"Anything I do at the Ministry, I get compared to my father. When I accidentally hurt the auror I was with, I was attacked by everyone. My own dad looked at me with shame. I mean he apologized the next day but no word can take back that look. Then I try my best..." He felt himself getting emotional and cleared his throat, ordering a bottle of whiskey and a glass but when it arrived, Rose took the glass and looked at Albus.
"Finish." She said softly. Albus gave her the look of death for a minute before he sat back.
"I tried doing what I thought my dad would do. I was vocal, I stood up for people, for people who didn't want to be stood up for but yet if something happened, would expect me to stand up still. It was my job and I got criticized for it. Like when I got attacked by the women of quidditch telling me how strong they were and basically saying I was concerned and that there was someone in the world who COULD hurt them was being disrespectful. So I got mad and I started to notice as time went on how meaningless I really was. Everyone has their path, but me? I'm stuck in a unappreciated job, having a bastard kid with a woman I love dearly and I can't make happy. I busted my ass to not run away, to get us a decent house and still... I got shite from that."
Rose sighed, taking everything in.
"Albus, sometimes people build themselves up by saying nothing can attack them because it gives them strength. They know on a level they need someone like you, obviously. If not you wouldn't be employed but you have to allow them their own sense of strength as well. And out of everyone you're lucky. You have no obligations like your brother has. I'm sure your sister gets to the point where she hates her job as well but you, your job has a purpose. You have a girlfriend who is a hard worker, who loves you. Not because of your blood, but because you're Albus. You'll do anything for her. You know how hard that is to find anymore? You're a rare gem in this society. You just have to get it together to show other people. It's not the end of the world."
"I thought of that a couple of times." Albus said, his face looking numb and void of emotion.
"Thought of what? The end of the world?" Rose laughed. "I'm sure we've all thought about it at one point in time."
"No..." Albus said, this time a soft smirk appearing though there didn't seem to be a meaning behind it or any reason for it. In fact it was cold, almost cold enough to send shivers down her spine.
"Then...what?" She asked cautiously. Ignoring the glass, Albus took a long drink from the bottle he held in his hands.
"It's not important." He said in a tight voice from the liquor burning his throat.
"What isn't im-" Rose stopped. "You mean you've thought about-" She couldn't finish the sentence. "Albus, that isn't funny, you should never play around with that."
"Do I look like I'm playing around?" Albus snapped. "I never said I tried, I just thought about it. Especially after me and Shay broke up the first time. Then I got my dog and figured if I did, no one would be around to feed and water her." He laughed, but Rose didn't. She just stared at him.
"You're not thinking anything now, are you?"
"I always think, Rose." Albus said. "It seems like the right thing to do half the time. The only thing that stops me is that I don't want to give them the satisfaction." He went to drink again but Rose took the bottle from him.
"Come on," She said softly, standing from the table.
"I'm not done yet."
"yes you are, come on. You haven't slept yet."
"I can manage to get home by myself."
"You're coming home with me."
"Not with Jackie Chan there."
"ALBUS!" Rose snapped loud enough to get everyone's attention. "Come on or I will get your father and everyone else involved." Oh Albus was growing pissed. But Rose didn't care, she grabbed his hand and yanked him up, still holding his hand while the other fished through her purse to find some more money to cover the whiskey and tossed it down.
She pulled Albus out of the pub and luckily their apparation worked, she always counted her lucky stars when it did. She led Albus up to her flat, thankfully Ken wasn't around at the moment so she didn't have to stop anything from happening.
"You just don't need to be alone right now, you need to sleep it off and then we'll talk when you get up."
"I'm not tired, Rose." Albus said. But Rose led him into her bedroom. "Damn it, I'm not staying."
"Shut up, yes you are." Rose snapped back, pushing Albus down on the bed. "I still have some of daddy's clothes he left over here when he stayed the weekend with me last." Rose said as she moved into her closet. "You can sleep in these and I'll wash the ones you have on." She spoke as she moved out, fresh clothes in hand but Albus didn't hear her words, it seemed as soon as his head touched the pillow, he was out cold.
Rose took to covering him up and turned off the light, closing the door behind her. She moved to the living room where she curled up on the couch, her mind racing with everything. Okay so Albus would be fine with some therapy or just her sticking her foot up his arse until he straightened out. Problem now though was when Ken came home... Oh well she could warn him since she was resting on the couch. However she was exhausted from working her extra hours (she had taken a couple hours to meet with Albus and was suppose to go back to work) and found her eyes getting heavy, leaving her to doze while resting on her sofa.
