"You wanted to check the memo before it went out, and then I have this for you to sign. You have a meeting at eight tomorrow - I'm sorry but that was the only time Dr. Leverman was available. Yes. Dr. Leverman I know she's not your favorite but she's whose on the board - and you should RVSP to the Worthington Spring Gala and - Mr. Osborn. I'm sorry are you alright?"
Harry stopped rubbing at his head (god damn headaches) and looked across the desk at his assistant, who was wearing the look of a man who had nearly reached the end of his work day and was looking forward to going home. Harry envied him. He wanted to go home. He wanted to go home and play video games, or maybe go out for dinner, or just watch TV.
But he had meeting to prepare for at eight am, and he had memos to sign off on, and things to check off – he was trying. He was trying so hard to walk that line between hiring people who were good at their jobs, and leaving them to it, and also monitoring and knowing what was going on his company. Because it was his it had his name on it (or his family name at least) and as long as it was standing – It was a big “see, I can do this!” to his father.
(Sometimes, late at night when it felt like everything he had to do was just pressing down on his brain, or when five people wanted his attention at once, Harry started to feel like he understood why Norman had been such a cranky bastard. Then he’d feel terrible, and want a drink, or a pill, and he’d have to call his sponsor, or go to a meeting and that just took more time--)
“Yeah, no I’m fine. Can you just – email me all that. What you just said and I’ll get to it.” He smiled at his assistant and then made a show of checking his watch (as if he hadn’t been counting down the minutes to now as well) before looking back; “it’s five- go home.”
“Are you-“
“I’m sure. I’ll sign off on the social media memo, I’ll deliver to to HR myself. I’ll make sure I’m prepped for the meeting with Leverman. I’ll even be on time –“ Should he just put a cot in his office maybe? “Just – ahh before you go, can you call a car, for the morning?”
He was walking home. He didn’t care what time it was when he left here he was walking home. He was going to do a lot more walking, it would be – good for him. Maybe he’d look into getting a gym installed in this building for the employees of course, for their health. He’d just add that to his To Do list.
His assistant promised the car would be ready and Harry smiled at him, and sent him home. Then settled in for what was sure to be a thrilling evening of reading over dry, boring files.
