Despite the damp, chilly weather and the rain that threatened, a large crowd had filled the Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park, filling every seat and overflowing out into the grounds. Some had come to gawk at the famous people, some hoping that the memorial would turn into a rally or protest, some just to say that they were there. Some were mutants, some civilian humans, some superpowered, some SHIELD agents discreetly moving among the crowd with their earpieces in, connected to everything going on as always. But most in the crowd were simply mourners who had come to pay their final respects to a great man.
The audience had been gathering since mid-morning, mostly humans or human-appearing, just a few pockets of visible mutants. Most were dressed in funereal garb, some holding pictures of Charles Xavier or signs supporting his message. There was a small group of protestors wearing Church of Humanity logos and holding signs reading “GOD HATES MUTANTS” and similar slogans, but they were kept outside the barriers manned by police and volunteer peacekeepers from the Avengers and other organizations. Overall, the mood was somber and fairly peaceful. Though a few scuffles broke out between certain factions who were there looking for a fight, they were quickly contained. A group of humans and visible mutants alike linked arms, faced off to the protesters, and sang “We Shall Overcome”; the shaky video footage was posted online and within an hour had been shared thousands of times. Other impromptu songs and chants broke out sporadically, causing stirs among the crowd and drawing in people passing by, and half an hour before the service was scheduled to start the audience had grown to an estimated ten to twelve thousand people, spilling over from the bandshell area into other areas of the park.
At quarter to one in the afternoon, all eyes were on the stage as the famous X-Men appeared, followed by a group of preteens and teenagers who were clearly students from Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. They settled into their seats at the side of the stage, and ten minutes later the microphones were turned on and the memorial began.
