Thread: Heroes Characters: Agent Coulson and the man himself, Captain Steve Rogers NPCs: Nick Fury Location: SHIELD transport, then Tulsa, Oklahoma Timeline: 2/29 Description: Phil plays handler to Steve during a hostage rescue. Rating: PG
Phil had been having a nice quiet day of logging paperwork when Fury arrived with a mission. It was action of the kind that he was most accustomed to, going onsite as a supervising eye to a more field-ready resource. He looked over the file that Fury had handed to him, a white male in his late 20s had held up part of a medical ward of a Tulsa hospital for the past twelve hours and the hostage negotiators weren't making progress. There were points of access into the building, but the man was well fortified. A mother and son were the main hostages along with four members of the hospital staff. The boy was in his early teens with his blue skin indicating some kind of visible mutation.
"The hostage taker has proven himself to be a bit unstable and there's an element of anti-mutant bias that I can't ignore, which is our main reason for not just letting the local folks and FBI handle it. The situation's such that I'd like to put my best thinker on this, but—"
"Well I'm very flattered you'd say so sir..." Coulson paused mid grin to quirk his head. "But?"
"I need you to promise me you're going to operate with a level head. We'd like to send in one of our best field resources to shut this guy down."
"When have I done anything but? Besides I've worked with Nat before and—"
"It's not Romanova. Someone with a bigger interest in keeping the death count low." Coulson's eyes went wide. He couldn't mean...
Coulson knew he was staring as he sat across for the man himself, Captain Steve Rogers. The soldier was a familiar heroic figure from his childhood, and while he'd had some opportunities to work with him before as part of the Avengers Initiative, they'd never had this kind of one-on-one mission together. Phil prided himself on being a pretty dependable guy, but this was the most dependable guy to ever live—a legend who had already sacrificed everything for his country many times over. To be able to act as his handler through a very sensitive mission...well, Phil was living the dream right about now.
"Sir." He was really trying not to stare. "Is there anything from the briefing that you'd like me to review with you? I know there wasn't a lot of time before we had to roll out..."
