As was a weekly event in Carter, a few of the locals prepared a meal for everyone. Supplies were donated communally, though the meals were always similar. A carb, this week was rice, and a vegetable stew. On special occasions or if they were lucky a meat, but typically people kept meat for themselves because it was so scarce. However, on large holidays people tried to acquire something nice for the whole town.
Everyone knew that in order to eat you had to be there between 5pm and 6:30 and you had to bring your own bowl or plate and utensils. There was always enough to go around, but never really any for seconds. The market was in the old church and having scavenged the school before it became a greenhouse they had plenty of folding chairs and tables. The tables were normally used for the market which took place every Tuesday and Thursday where people could come to trade (either by having a stall or trading with others in stalls), but on Saturdays they were moved into one long table and chairs were placed around it. Many times most of the town would help set up and take down, and spend time socializing with each other. Fresh water was available as well, if you brought your own cup.
Dinner wasn't just about eating, it was about community. It's one reason Carter had lasted as long as it had.
