WHO: Eddie Wood and Edmund Proudfoot
WHEN: Wednesday evening, August 15th
WHERE: Mamma Rosa's
WHAT: Dinner, old friends and counsel.
RATING: PGish (maybe some language?)
STATUS: Closed, complete.

First boyfriends could be funny things. Thankfully, Eddie was still very close friends with hers. And after Ed’s spectacular drunken journal entry, she’d been a bit concerned, to say the least. Connor had gone over to check up on him, and she’d been reassured that he was alright. It seemed like it was a bit more serious then she’d thought though. And after a day spent thinking about him, she’d gotten a hold of Ed and suggested they have dinner. It had been great to catch up and do drinks last week, and she was just happy that she was back in the country and could do a face to face friendship again. It was impossible for her to get tired of the fact that she could see people whenever she wanted to. Especially Oliver, and her close friends. There were somethings that a journal or an owl just wasn't good for.

They’d agreed to meet at Mamma Rosa’s for dinner, a small Italian restaurant in Diagon Alley. Apparently, Mamma Rosa “saw” your order, which was kind of intriguing. Eddie had never been and was definitely curious. The place wasn’t crowded, and was a little more private then some of their other haunts. Eddie brushed her hair back from her face as she entered and gave the room a quick scan. No Ed yet. With a smile, she followed the hostess to a table and got comfortable.

"You do seem a bit grumpier then normal." She pursed her lips thoughtfully and then laughed. "I guess I'll just have to blame your old age." Eddie chuckled.

"Well, I'm glad I can assist you in your late night boredom." She smiled warmly. "And you can help me be distracted from my endless hours of paperwork as term gets started." And actually, Eddie was looking forward to getting going with class. She wanted to meet the students, and it was going to be interesting to start juggling personal relationships with professional ones. Both in her relationship with Connor and in her close friendship with Logan in school.

"I actually am." She commented thoughtfully. "It'll be challenging I think. Especially the subject matter. In some ways, the States are a little ahead in muggle interaction I think." Eddie tapped a finger against her lower lip. "But it's something that needs to be taught in a more modern way." She paused. She was getting on her soap box. Eddie chuckled a little. "And Mr. Lynch is going extremely well, thank you very much." Eddie's smile turned bright and happy for a moment.

"I'm glad he came by." Her smile sobered a little and her eyes sharpened. Whatever had caused that kind of reaction in Ed had to have been heavier then normal. Before she got a chance to hear Ed's response, Mamma Rosa and the waiter appeared and Ed was off the hook momentarily. She took a sip of her wine and a bite of her pasta and sighed happily. "Oh that's heavenly..."

She gave him a few moments to relax and lower his guard and enjoy his food. "Not forgetting over here." Eddie looked up from her food with a smile and eyebrow raise. "Still waiting." She pinned him with a firm look.

"Oh ha ha," he pretended to laugh. "You are so funny." He couldn't help but snort a bit himself though. "Yes, let's blame it on that."

He grinned at her. "You'll be doing more than that - the Auror department will benefit with some late night snacks. Because if Mamma should screw up - Merlin forbid - I'm sure someone there will want whatever she sends."

He took a sip of his wine and dug into his pasta as he listened to her talk. Her expression was animated as she talked about her teaching, and it made him happy to see her so in her element. "You'll knock their socks off, Eddie. They won't know what hit them." He swallowed a bite of the ravioli, which was incredible, and paused to marvel at them for a moment. "That's....wow is that good." He happened to glance up and saw Mamma looking at their table and beaming approvingly. He raised his glass of wine in her direction before taking another sip. "Glad to hear he's treating you right. He's a good bloke. But, y'know, if you ever need someone a little more, er, subtle, than your brother to menace him a bit...you can count on me." He winked to let her know he was just teasing.

He was reaching for the bread when Eddie returned to her earlier line of questioning, which he'd hoped she'd forgotten about. "Eddie," he sighed. "Work is...work," he started. "I had a frustrating case that wasn't going anywhere...and I wasn't sleeping well. But that's all over - I got yanked off of it today by Kingsley and given a different case. So..." he gestured vaguely. "But I suppose you're talking about the journals the other night."

The food was delicious. So, so good. Eddie was happy to let Mamma order for her any day at any time. She let out a happy noise of appreciation. "If all her food tastes like this, I don't think it's possible for someone to dislike it. Ever." She sighed and took another slow bite of her pasta. Amazing.

"Thanks Ed." She lowered her fork and smiled warmly at him. "I honestly can't wait to start." And unlike Charms, she felt like what she was going to be teaching was going to be having an impact. It wasn't just about technique. It was about something a little more serious and needed. At least in her mind. And she was excited about getting the chance to teach it.

"I'll keep that in mind." Eddie laughed. "And hey, as intimidating as Oliver can be, you're the one who'd get creative." She took a drink of her wine. As Ed reluctantly answered her, Eddie watched him intently, her blue eyes fixed on his face. She listened and took in his expression, slowly lowering her glass back to the table. Eddie tilted her head to the side and one corner of her mouth lifted in a small and slightly concerned smile. "Yes." She stated. "Talk to me, Ed." She leaned forward a little, her expression frank and open.

"I'd have to agree. Seems like she'll do pretty well if she keeps this up," he said, enjoying another forkful of ravioli thoroughly.

He smiled at her again. "It's true. I think you've really found your calling, Eddie. You can tell. You just...glow," he said. "Unless that's about Connor," he added with a smirk. He quirked an eyebrow at her. "Mm, creative menacing is a favorite of mine...but in this case, I sincerely hope it won't come to that."

He put down his fork as he sighed. "Well, it sounds cliche of me to say," he paused briefly, "but it was all about a girl. I apparently did something more common to teenage witches - got pissed and drunk journaled about my ongoing heartbreak." He looked back at her, wondering what she'd think of him now. He'd never handled a breakup like this - not theirs, not with Gwen, or Iona, or any of the other women he'd dated. It was ridiculous - he and Meg hadn't even dated and he was turning into a basket case.

"He might have something to do with it." Eddie grinned unashamedly at him. "But yes, this is definitely more my passion then Charms was. I may be good at Charms, but it's not as... it's not as needed, you know?" She smiled, leaning forward a little as she spoke. "And I feel like I have something to say about it that's actually going to help."

Eddie took another bite of her pasta, relishing it thoroughly. It had been a while since she'd enjoyed food so much. Well worth every knut spent. But she lowered her fork as Ed started to talk, food forgotten as her friend finally opened up. Not at all what she'd expected. "Oh Ed..." Her heart ached for him. That position was never a fun one.

Leaning forward against the table, Eddie let her fork rest on her plate and smiled a little, her eyes meeting his. "So tell me about this heartbreak." She kept her voice soft, but direct. Ed needed to get it off his chest. If it was causing drunken journaling then it was most likely not the healthiest situation.

"It seems like it," he said sincerely, "and Charms is definitely useful, but I agree - we need to be thinking more fully about the way our society works. All sides of it." He couldn't help but think of his case again - it certainly seemed like there were still a fair number of nutters out there who could use a lesson about equality from Eddie. Or ten.

He smiled hesitantly at her, hoping she wouldn't find him pitiful by the time this conversation was over. "Well, it's pretty ridiculous, actually. I've lo- had feelings for this woman for ages," he laughed briefly, no humor in it. "Since school, really." His eyes flicked to hers. "It's not you, don't worry," he said with a more genuine smile this time. "Wouldn't dream of trying to come between you and Lynch. No it's..." he sighed again, wondering if he could really tell her. He supposed if he could trust anyone with this, he could trust Eddie.

"It's...Meaghan," he muttered.

“Exactly.” Eddie smiled a little. The more that students could understand about the muggle world, the more balanced and informed they would be as adults. At least, that was her hope. The actuality was oftentimes less rosy then the idea. But she was going to give it her formidable best.

Her eyes on his face, Eddie watched him quietly, her expression non-judgemental and sympathetic. A quick lift of her eyebrows and a chuckle were her response to the idea of it being her. As much fun as she and Ed had had, they made better friends. Whoever this person was had to be someone that Eddie knew. If it dated back that far. She tilted her head a little, her face serious as he got to the point. When he did, she had a moment of shock. Meaghan. Wow.

“Meaghan? For that long?” She said quietly, straightforward understanding on her face. “Ed, why haven’t you ever said anything to her?”

Whoa. So that was what it was like to say it out loud, to someone else. Even though he wasn't talking to Meg herself, it still made his head spin a bit. He dropped his head into his hands and scrubbed them over his face before looking up at Eddie again. "Yeah. And yeah," he shrugged at her final question. "Because I'm ridiculous?"

He shook his head. "When it started, all those years ago, I just thought it was teenage hormones, and I didn't want to screw up our friendship. I started dating Gwen, and then Iona, and I thought it would go away. Hell, when I was with Iona, I thought it had. I loved Iona, and what we had was real. But after it was over, I realized that what I felt for Meg was still there. But there's no way I can tell her now. Absolutely none, and I think it's driving me a bit mental."

Eddie reached over and gently tugged one of his hands down and wrapped her small fingers around it. She listened quietly and intently as he talked, her eyes on his face. When he finished, she squeezed his hand gently and let her gaze drop to the table for a few seconds as she processed. Looking back up at him, she smiled firmly.

"You are not ridiculous." She smiled a little at him. "She's Meg. I understand." That he'd held onto it for so long without saying anything was a bit of a shock. "But Ed, this isn't doing good things for you." Eddie stated frankly. "I love Meg, dearly. And I love you. But holding onto this isn't healthy."

He cracked a wry smile when Eddie reassured him that he wasn't ridiculous. But he knew she had a point about this not being healthy. He nodded wearily. "Yeah, I'm beginning to realize that." He laughed at himself briefly. "My journal incident was a big clue into just how much this has gotten to me."

He took a long swallow of his wine before looking at Eddie again. "D'you know I even wrote to the Prophet's advice column about this?" He snorted. "That's what it's come to."

"Yeah, the journal incident might be a good indicator." Eddie smiled a little wryly. It worried her that he'd been holding onto it for so long. That was a long time to be carrying a torch, especially when the other person was one of your closest friends. Drunken rantings in journals was definitely not Ed's style. But feeling that way about a friend and not being able to say anything about it had to be torturous. And poor Meg had absolutely no idea, Eddie was positive. Especially considering what good friends Meg and Ed were.

"You did?" Eddie couldn't help cracking an amused smile. "What sort of advice did you get?"

"Yeah, I can hardly believe it, but I did," he squeezed her hand gently. "Oh, the advice. It was good, I suppose. Logical. It suggested I tell her...which is not an option. Or, if I couldn't talk to her about it, maybe try to get some distance from her, so I can get some perspective."

He picked up his fork and took another bite of his dinner. "I think I'm just going to have to try to stay away from her and force myself to work through this - for real this time." He smiled at her. "You're the first, and only, person I've told. Maybe now that it's off my chest, I can let it go."

Eddie squeezed his hand back gently and then let him have his hand back so that he could eat. "I think the second part of that advice might be good advice to follow." She smiled sympathetically at him and then took drink of her wine. Definitely needed the wine for a conversation like the one they were having.

"As hard as it's going to be Ed, I think that's probably wise." She told him frankly. "Distance might be the best way to handle it. You can't really be her friend until it's dealt with. It's not fair to you." Eddie knew she was being blunt, but she loved Ed and she hated seeing him like she'd seen him the week before. Even if it had only been second hand through a journal.

"You needed to tell someone." She took another sip of her wine and smiled a little at him. "Thank you for trusting me." Eddie was just glad that he'd said something.

He took a deep breath before exhaling slowly. "It's really tough to do that, though. I tried a little while ago and she thought she'd done something wrong because I wasn't coming round. It upset her, and then I felt guilty, so I couldn't stay away."

He took another bite of ravioli, the food still delicious despite his emotional upheaval. "Last time I saw her, I almost told her. I hinted that I'd had feelings for someone for ages....she didn't get it," he chuckled bitterly. "Basically told me that if I were talking about her, it would completely freak her out. I can't tell her, Eddie. I can't."

Ugh. This situation just wasn’t going to be easy no matter what. “As much as it’s going to be awful, you might just have to do it.” Eddie wanted to wince in sympathy. “It can’t keep going on forever like it has been, Ed.” She told him quietly and firmly. “I wish I could say something that would make you feel better. The best I can offer is what will fix things in the long term. Hopefully.”

Her heart ached for him. Meg was darling and wonderful and one of Eddie’s closest friends. But she could definitely be oblivious. And poor Ed feeling so deeply for Meg for so long and then having her be so freaked out by the possibility… Merlin. No wonder he’d ended up getting drunk. “No, you can’t.” She agreed quietly. Part of her wished that he could, just to clear the air. But at this point, maybe the best solution was for him to try and get her out of his system.

"Yeah," he nodded. "I'm thinking that I have to get some space in order to figure this all out. Maybe just communicate with her over journals - and even then, not a lot - for awhile." He took another sip of his wine, shaking his head. "My new case will actually make it really easy - and true - to say that work is going to be taking up a lot of my time now."

He finished the last of his ravioli, and set down his fork. "I just...I want her to be happy. Even if I can't be the one who makes her that way. Her happiness is the most important thing to me. Is there a way you could...I don't know...let her know I'm not angry with her? If she asks why I'm not around?" he sighed. "Sorry, I probably shouldn't ask you that. It's not fair to you."

“I think that would probably be wise.” Eddie took another bite of her pasta, her expression thoughtful. As much as Meg wouldn’t understand it, that couldn’t really be helped. Space and time would hopefully be a help. Eddie looked up at him again. She wished that there was some way to make the whole thing easier for him. “And I’m not going anywhere.” She stated quietly. “So if you need me…”

“Ed, it’s fine. Really. If it comes up and she asks, I’ll tell her as best I can.” Her meal was just about finished, and Eddie dropped her fork to reach across and squeeze his hand again.

He nodded. "Thanks, Eddie, you don't know how much I appreciate that." He finished off his wine and smiled at her. "I promise I won't monopolize your time - Lynch'd have my head - but I may send you an owl or ward you from time to time," he grinned, "that way I won't end up embarrassing myself on the journals again."

Ed squeezed her hand back, gratefully. "Thank you...I mean, you don't have to tell her any of what we talked about tonight - in fact, you probably shouldn't...but, just be there for her, yeah? I know you would anyway. You really are the best, Eddie."

He smiled at her, a bit of relief finally entering his heart. "Now, what do you say we test Mamma's powers where dessert is concerned?"
