Nate had managed to convince Draco to sit for a reading after Draco had brought in robes to be altered and paint stained clothes to be fixed. He could tell Draco was dubious, but he still shuffled the cards and handed them to Nate with one arched eyebrow.
Nate hoped to see the Princess of Swords and confirm Luag's suspicions, but the card didn't appear in the layout. However, there was the Queen of Cups, dead center, right at the heart of Draco's problems. That was interesting.
"You've got two women in your life," Nate said. "One's trouble, and one's not, probably. You've got the Queen of Cups as a central problem facing you right now. She's someone who is, or was, a good wife, loyal to a fault, and ruled by her heart. I'm not sure why that's bad, but what crosses it is, well--" Nate frowned, because this didn't make any sense. "Marriage. Fertility. You--"
"I'm not getting married," Draco said dryly. "You do realize that these are pieces of paper, Summerby. Mere images on cards, that apparently are telling ridiculous tales of impossible happenings. I have never been married, nor do I intend to be."
"Right." Nate's lips pressed together. "Is there a woman who's trouble for you right now, who might be the card at the center? Or someone who could be angling for marriage that could be causing you trouble?"
"You've two cards about marriage, and i don't see either of them as likely," Draco pointed out. "The only woman causing me difficulty at the moment is my mother."
Narcissa Malfoy. Who, from what Nate knew, loved her husband when he was alive. And loved her family so much that she betrayed Voldemort to save them. The Queen of Cups. And yet, she was trouble now, at least according to Draco, and Nate knew he had to look at his notes later to see if the reading would fit if it were her. He needed to think about it. "Right. Well, you're working towards victory, based on... jealousy."
Nate closed his mouth, because Draco was right. This was one of those readings that just didn't make any sense. He worried at the words in his mind, twisting them around before they came out slowly. "You want something. And someone else doesn't want you to have it, but that jealousy is what you'll use to get it." Maybe. "Whatever it is, you've had false starts towards it already, and it isn't going to get any easier before you win through. There's going to be some suffering, and maybe the loss of a loved one."
"Mine or someone else's?" Draco idly inquired. "I've already lost someone: the mother of my child. Perhaps your cards are confused about the timing."
"It would help if you could take this seriously," Nate muttered.
"I might, if it seemed worthwhile," Draco pointed out. "But this is Divination. And what you are saying makes no sense."
Fine, Nate would just press on, ignoring the fact that Draco was irritating him. Then he'd write down all his notes and discuss this with Luag tonight, and perhaps the two of them could make more sense out of it than he was here and now. There must be some aspect he was missing, some alternate meaning that would make it all snap into coherence. "You see things now as a chance to meet up with an old friend, and to form new alliances. But the people around you see jealousy again. They see a would-be lover, either you or someone else, turning jealous, which might be where that strength in jealousy comes from if they're right." He ignored Draco's arched eyebrow of disbelief and continued.
"That card could also be you. That in your current situation, when your friends and family look at the situation, they see you at the center of it, because you should be the Prince of Wands." Not the Princess of Swords at all. "Then we've got the Queen of Wands as your hopes and fears. Traditionally, she's an unfaithful woman, which could be a fear. But with all the cards pointing to alliances and marriage, I'd say making her the Queen, which would turn you from Prince to King, would be a valid interpretation as well."
Draco made a hand motion as if to say, go on.
"In the end you strike a balance. There's tension, but military friendships win out." Nate gave Draco a serious look because this was the first card other than the Queen of Cups to go back to what Nate thought of as the central issue. "Bonds you're forming now, as you--" Nate faltered at the mild glare Draco levied at him. "Look, the world is changing," he said firmly. "Friendships are being shaken up as people are getting angry. That's what it's saying."
Draco smirked. "So you're saying my love is going to win the war?"
No, he hadn't been going to say that at all. But when Nate sat back and looked at the reading, he started to nod. "Apparently, yes. Marriage doesn't have to mean wedding bells and shagging, though. It could be about an alliance, a strong enough alliance that'll shake things up to get to a victory. And standing in your way is your mum, and being able to use interpersonal frustration between folks is a strength. That's what I'm saying."
"Right." Draco pushed his chair back, nodding as he stood. "Well, this has all been rather enlightening, but I believe we're done here, Summerby."
Nate rose as well, and gestured toward the door out of the back room and into the main part of the store. "I'll have your things for you next Monday."
"Thank you. And good luck with the wedding Friday." Draco smirked again, amused. "And I promise, should your reading come true, I shall, of course, commission you to prepare the attire for my own matrimonial. I doubt, however, that is likely to happen."
Nate suspected he'd be making uniforms for a revolution long before that were true. "Of course, Malfoy. I wouldn't expect anything less."
