Nate and Mandy were in the back room of The Summer Bee, a pot of tea and two cups on the table, flanking a small plate of leftover pink and red heart-shaped biscuits left from the day before. Nate had laid out the cards on the table and sat next to her, leaning on his elbows as he considered the layout before him. "Well," he began slowly, "there may not be a lot of cups in this reading, but I still think you've got family and a bloke or two on your mind. The thing is, without the cups here, I'm not sure if those thoughts involve your heart or not, yeah?" He cast a glance sideways at her, then jumped in to the explanation.
"See, you start out at the center feeling overburdened by things and a little lost -- that's the Nine of Swords there. But your conflict is the Three of Wands, bringing you some hope and a potential partnership. It's also a card of some kind of established nobility or power, so it might be that the person who's going to help you get unlost is someone in power of some kind." His gaze flicked to the King of Swords (he'd almost flinched when he'd laid it down), but he again discarded the recent usual meaning he had for that card. It didn't fit with the rest of the reading.
"You're aiming for a bloke, right out, the King of Swords here." He tapped the card in the crowning position. "And he fits with the conflict. He's the sort of bloke who takes charge and is in control. He's good with the advice, and he's very firm in his opinions, whether good or bad. And how you'll get there is a journey." Nate grinned at that, showing her the card with the Fool on it, dancing ahead without looking at the ground, the small dog nipping at his heels. "You're setting out in innocence, trying not to look too hard at what you're doing, trusting that you'll get where you need to go without tripping up.
"And you're coming from a pretty good place," Nate allowed. "It's a good place to set out from, if you're really wanting to set out. Behind you is the Ten of Pentacles, which is all about a solid material base in home and hearth. It says you've settled down, got a family and all the riches that come with that, possibly a new place to live. But when you look ahead, it's not nearly so clear. The Eight of Wands reversed is a more difficult card, and says there are going to be roadblocks on your journey. Delays, and possibly some jealousy as well." That worried him, because he had a tough time thinking of Terry as a jealous bloke, considering the relationship the two had. He flicked another glance at Mandy, but decided to finish out the reading so they could pick it apart more closely with all the information on the table.
He had to consider the Princess of Wands, before saying quietly, "This is you. And I'm going to come back to it at the end, but at its base, its a card of quick actions, falling for someone too quickly, and a card of messages. You're hoping to hear good things about whoever it is. But your friends and family are worried that your wishes will remain unfulfilled, with the Nine of Cups reversed. They see love emptied out."
The next card made him pause again, and he said slowly, "The Queen of Swords is often the card of a widow. I don't think that means Terry's going to die, it's not like that. But this is in your hopes and fears position, and what I see is this. Right now, you are a princess, a young woman who is looking to grow into something. And you hope to create a new alliance with the King of Swords, which makes you his Queen. But at the same time, you are afraid that this could fracture the alliance that you have already with Terry."
He sighed, looking at the last card in the reading, the Five of Pentacles. "I think I should tell you that this card has appeared in almost every reading I've done lately. Whether I was talking about politics, professions, or love, this card has come up in some capacity or another. I suppose it's a sign of the times, that the current situation makes for strange bedfellows, new alliances coming out of how we've all been tossed about emotionally. And at the same time, it says that it's never easy, and it may be difficult for friends and lovers to go forward easily. It's one of those cards that says you get what you want, but it may not be so easy to keep it, if an alliance is what you're looking for."
Nate offered her a rueful smile. "And now's where you tell me if I'm anywhere even near the topic you had in mind, or if the cards have decided to randomly lecture you on something else. This may be one of the more coherent readings I've seen in a while, really."
