Lily rolled over, burying her face in her pillow to avoid the light streaming through the window. She wasn’t ready to get up yet and have to face her roommates. Sleep was impossible to reclaim though, her mind racing with the realization that everyone had been right about Severus and yesterday had shown her that. She’d just been trying to help, to stop James’ bullying and her best friend had called her a mudblood. It wasn’t the word that had hurt her, she’d heard it plenty of times before after all. But the look on his face had hurt her and that was what had driven her to the castle and ultimately the dormitory. The conversation she’d had with Severus after dinner hadn’t helped any and she’d finally ended up crying herself to sleep as she accepted that their friendship had to be over. He wanted to be a Death Eater and nothing she said could convince him that there was something wrong with that. The silence finally registered with her and she opened her eyes, getting ready to ask her roommates what was wrong with them since they were never so quiet in the mornings but the words died in her throat as she took in the strange surroundings. This wasn’t her room at the castle. This wasn’t any room she’d ever been in. But as she looked around the room she noticed some of her things scattered about the room. Her clothes hanging in the closet, her wand and pictures of her family on the nightstand and while that might have been comforting to some, it only added to Lily’s confusion and the little germ of fear in her chest. She got out of the bed, grabbing her housecoat and tying the belt as she walked out of the bedroom, calling hello as she went. She didn’t know if anyone could hear her, if there was even anyone else in this place but she didn’t want to surprise them at any rate. She stepped out into the hallway, realizing as the door closed behind her that she was in what looked like an apartment apartment building, and she turned to see if there was a number on the door to the one she’d come out of so that she could find it again, committing it to memory before she walked away to see if she couldn’t find someone. This whole situation was really odd, but James Potter was taking it all in stride. After all, he had two of his best mates here, one of whom was his roommate. There was a party next weekend - clearly in his honor since it had been announced the day he arrived - and it was kind of brilliant getting to check out the future. The only down side he could see was the absence of Peter and Evans. Well, that and there was no Snivelus to torment, but the lack of that git was a good thing, too. He was wandering the corridors, exploring a little bit, when he saw a familiar flash of ginger hair and a bright grin lit up his face. “Evans?” he called out. “Is that you?” Needless to say, he was pleased to see her. She was one thing that was missing from this place, as far as he was concerned. “It’s about time you showed up, luv,” he added. Really, this was brilliant. Maybe they’d get to have that first date after all! Lily felt that increasingly familiar mix of annoyance and excitement when she saw James standing in one of the hallways that she turned down. Her feelings towards him had been growing increasingly complicated the last few months, she’d always had a sort of begrudging admiration for the way he stuck up for his friends, but lately it felt like it was becoming more than that. And if she was perfectly honest with herself she’d have to admit that it was starting to feel like the few crushes she’d had in the past. “I don’t know what kind of game or prank you’re up to with this Potter, but it’s not funny” she said, taking a step towards him, her voice wavering just a little. James’ grin slipped a little when he caught the catch in her voice. Sure, he liked to flirt and tease and pranks were definitely his style, but not something like this. This was beyond him and he had absolutely no clue who or what was behind it. He could tell she was upset, though, and he shook his head as he stepped closer to the redhead. “This wasn’t me, Lily,” he told her, more serious now. “I mean, you can call me ‘Master’ if you really want to, but I didn’t do this. I don’t know what did.” Okay, so maybe he couldn’t help joking a little, even in the midst of a very serious moment, but he was really just trying to lighten the mood a little. One of two things was likely to happen as a result - she would either laugh at him or hit him. Hopefully it would be the first thing, since that was what he was aiming for. “C’mon, let me buy you some breakfast and I’ll explain as much as I can.” He hadn’t been here for very long, but it was longer than Evans had and he’d picked up a few things, at least. If he could help her adjust, he was going to do it. James looked out for his mates, and in his time that included a certain ginger who he was looking to be a bit more than friends with. |
