The sky is bright gray, promising more snow. Katara pulls her coat tight around her, as if that could ward off the weather.

Sometimes she thinks it would be nice to leave the Water Tribe, to travel, to see places other than this cold, ice-covered land. She could find a Waterbending master, and maybe even Dad.

She never dwells on the idea long, however: this is her home, and her tribe needs her.

"Katara, are you going to help?"

Wrenched from her thoughts, Katara turns to her brother. "Sorry!"

She rushes to the water's edge and, concentrating hard, bends water into the waiting buckets.

"Couldn't you just fill them the normal way?" Sokka asks.

"I have to practice!" Katara insists. She looks at the ocean. "Someday I may really need Waterbending." When I'm not so needed here.
