“I wonder why Peeves is so hellbent upon irritating us tonight?” Remus said. Severus’ hand was warm around his and the night sky was brilliant, if cold, filled with a smattering of stars and slowly scudding clouds. “I’d have thought he’d be more…I don’t know…restrained closer to the Winter Solstice.”

“I once found him stealing letters to Santa Claus that the Muggleborn Slytherin Firsties had written. The scrolls he could open were drenched with ectoplasmic tears and the others were beyond redemption,” Severus said as he pulled Remus closer to his side, their elbows bumping as they walked through the snow.

“Perhaps Peeves missing Christmas, then? Do ghosts and ghoulies celebrate manmade holidays?” Remus asked with a laughed. Severus shook his head and squeezed his hand.

“Why don’t you be a good Gryffindor and write Santa a letter and let him know that Peeves is pining for a long-gift?” he said facetiously. “I’m certain that will make you feel better about the poltergeist’s plight.”

Remus tugged Severus to a halt and then pulled him for a kiss on the nose. “Brilliant idea. Why not share my goodwill with the less fortunate undead, eh?”

Severus laughed and then had to whirl Remus around in a quick embrace as the Peeves and the Bloody Baron’s Ghostly Hunt roared through the castle wall just ahead of them. “And make certain you let Ol’ Jolly St. Nick know that Peeves will need some new sheets this year, while you’re at it?” Severus quipped. Remus laughed into his scarf and nodded.
