Remus sang all the way through the Forbidden Forest, most likely frightening the most fearsome of creatures from their path. Severus harrumphed to himself, hiding his small smile in his scarf. Listening to Remus’ tenor soothed his savage breast and his ire, and Severus felt less like dropping the centaur into the frozen Black Lake and more like healing him and hearing his remarkable story.

Currycombe skipped forward, letting the stony leg bob lower once they cleared the forest’s edge and began their approach along the Black Lake’s eastern side. “Darkling!” he called. “Darkling has ponies for Currycombe?” he asked. Remus chuckled between stanzas and then began singing once more.

Severus slowed down, his hand tightening on his satchel strap as he slanted a look at the porlock. “No. Potions masters have no need of ponies, of any equine of any sort,” he said with a raised eyebrow.

“Oh.” Currycombe went back to pushing the stony leg along, even though it wasn’t necessary. “Porlocks like ponies,” he said to no one in particular.

“I like ponies, Currycombe,” Remus said. He stepped closer as they skirted the frozen edge of the Black Lake, the ice that had been pushed up on the beach crunching under their boots and hooves. “I used to ride, before I was bitten. But I still love to see horses running. Very majestic.”

Severus snorted. An action which set off a peal of laughter from Remus and Currycombe. “And a bit noisy, too.” Remus’ laughter invited Severus to join in even as he stalked ahead of them.

“Darkling would be fine stallion,” Currycombe announced.

“Yes, he is majestic,” Remus agreed. Severus’ stiff back relaxed slightly and he slowed his walk. “I’d say even mythic.” Severus snorted again, softly, and chuckled as Currycombe and Remus laughed with him.

I called him a Deus Ex Machina, and that's what he is! I'm having a lot of fun writing for him!
