"Perhaps they've gone to hang up their stockings?" Severus said. "Or they won't get to find out what's in Santa's bulging sack just for them?" He swayed again.
"I'm just not prepared for this kind of horror," Lucius said. "I have the most appalling image in my mind now, and it's quite put me off sex."
"Really?" Hermione asked.
"Perhaps not." Lucius smiled, almost sweetly. "I could be talked into it, by the right people."
"We could hide under the bedcovers," Severus said. "Then we'd be safe." Then he looked sad, and folded into himself. "Sometimes. Not always."
"If you're under the covers with me, Severus, you'll come to no harm." Lucius patted him on the shoulder. "I'll look after you. Remember, I'm your beshtesht friend? And Hermione over there is looking delightfully fierce; she'll protect you."
"I will," she said. "Severus, has anyone given you any presents today?"
Severus shook his head. "No. Not today."
"Another day, then?" Lucius asked.
"There were some humbugs, from Shybil - do you want some?" Severus opened a drawer in his desk, and rummaged in its depths. "She gave them to me yeshterday."
He proffered a bag to them, and Hermione took a sweety. She cast several diagnostic charms, but there was nothing wrong with them. "They're fine," she said. "Except you don't expect to find extract of Mitleroot in humbugs."
"Severus is usually a suspicious person." Lucius peered into the open drawer. "And very little would get past him. He'd test any gifts for poison or tampering."
Severus nodded. "Especially from her. She fancies me."
"But what if someone were really very sneaky indeed." Lucius drew out the sherbert lemons, and examined them carefully.
"They've got something in them," Severus said. "Albush ushed them to make people biddable."
"And combined with Mittleroot..." Hermione's voice trailed off. "I think we need to have a word with Professor Trelawney. Now."
