battle wounds (eragos)
Someone somewhere was laughing at them. Geoff, Cols, and Martine were all looking through their set of bars towards the set of bars holding Eithne and Eragos in. Eithne didn't look as upset as she might have normally. Really, getting arrested was something she was used to, she doubted that any of them ever spent much time in a jail cell. When it came to the White Riders, well, at least they kept you well fed. She was sitting on the floor of the cell, facing the wall and digging a pebble against the stone there. "I've been in this cell before." She mentioned. Eragos didn't even grunt. Their conversations thus far had been done mostly with wild stares, sour faces, and shrugging on Eithne's part.
It really wasn't that bad.
Eithne had a good idea that Eragos wasn't so mad about getting arrested. He was mad because she'd tried to run, wasn't he? Well she would have liked to point out that Agrippa wasn't exactly going to be a prince about this situation. He'd told Eithne to keep her hands out of it, told her to stay in the castel and let the real riders handle it. She scowled at the wall remembering, and dragged her pebble down the wall again. Trying to straighten the E that she'd carved into the wall the last time. She thought once that she'd be able to get her whole name there, but the E was the only thing so far.
The fact of the matter was that Eithne was not as comfortable here as she was pretending to be. If she looked alarmed then she thought all of them, save Eragos, would be alarmed too. But she was alarmed for a completely different reason than they probably were. Being arrested never bothered her. They fed you well enough and you were out as long as your crime wasn't serious. Death was serious, they'd been doing a lot of killing but none of that could have been pinned on them right now. No, she was alarmed because she thought that this delay would cost her all the ground they gained. She would never again get so close to finding out the truth of her past now. Not with this delay. Agrippa would hold her until her hope was lost and then what would she do? Leave the riders for good?
If Agrippa managed to steal that hope from her she might murder him and make a visit to the gallows. Of course, those thoughts were very grim. Even if she disliked the captain on most days she did not feel like killing him. She did not kill so easily and would not even try. But she did worry about losing hope, about failing this mission. About losing everything once and for all. How much of herself did she have left? How much time did they have left? Eithne grimaced at the wall again, but did not turn just yet. Would Eragos understand this feeling? Was it the something he felt inside that jail in Illos? But then he'd broken down the wall. She wished she could have.
But no, they had this duty and it wasn't just any jail. It was the jail they all worked for.
Geoff was whimpering about being here. He wanted none of it. Eithne said he was a baby, and Cols had glared at the both of them. Now they could all hear the far door opening, and the sound of boots. it was Martine who stood first, staring down the hallway. He dropped back from the bars and Eithne turned her head. Well, if it wasn't the bull himself. Eithne rolled her eyes and went back to the wall. Agrippa was going to let all of them have it.
He couldn't keep them here forever. They could just lie about it.
Well, Eragos wouldn't. She turned around to give the Captain her full attention. She folded the skirts of her dress over her legs and saluted in a very lazy way. She had to pretend that this didn't bother her, it really did bother her. The longer they were here, the more likely it was that someone would die. Boq was still missing. She had to track him down. Her eyes were on Agrippa's now. If only she could just knock him out and steal the keys..
This. Was going to be a long night.
