stealing princes (ithacles)
It'd been nearly a month since that disastrous ball in which Lethe had tried to force a wife upon Ithacles only to have Ithacles turn the tables on her and announce that he'd marry Vedette. It only took a week of badgering Ithacles to find out that he was not marrying Vedette, or married to her already. That entire time Lethe hadn't left Vedette side, and since then had made sure Vedette was on opposite sides of not only the castle, but the city itself most of the time. Vedette was sick of it. The princess should have been satisfied with the fact that Ithacles was not married so she could continue to try in vain to set him up with one of their rich neighbors, or one of her friends. Instead Lethe was making it her personal mission to keep them as far apart as possible.
Not only was this troublesome because Vedette's main purpose here in Faustben was to protect Ithunvel's bloodline, but also because Ithacles was one of her closest friends. Life was relatively boring without him around and Vedette was beginning to wonder if Lethe would do this forever or if her temper tantrum over the ball would end by the time winter did. Of course, Winter was still months away from ending and Vedette could not stand being holed up here in Faustben for another month without Ithacles for entertainment. Lethe had forbade her from seeing him, which sounded like a challenge to Vedette.
Vedette did enjoy challenges.
The problem was of course, was finding Ithacles when he was without a guard. Those guards were handpicked by his sister and would run off to tell their mistress all about Ithacles running into Vedette, or Vedette running into him. The only suitable solution was to capture him off guard and get him the hell out of Faustben. But then, that could be considered kidnapping. Not that Ithacles would have minded it. He was probably as bored as she was. Or Lethe was forcing fair maiden after fair maiden on him in hopes of finding him a wife. That thought should not have bothered her.
She was going to kidnap him.
She had the advantage on all of them with all the snow on the ground and covering everything. She could easily walk across frozen rooftops and hide in snow filled pines without freezing to death. She just needed the right moment. She needed the right chance to catch the Prince alone, or at least relatively alone. And then there was escaping this damned city and it's Princess. It took a week of planning. Ithacles had certain duties that were always attended to on time. He was to oversee the ending of the winter harvest. This would take the Prince to the very edge of the city, which was perfect. There were a bit more witnesses than she wanted, but if she timed herself right no one would notice the Prince suddenly gone, at least at first, before he was suppose to make his boring speech.
And all of them would have to assume that raiders or orc, or a bear got him. Or maybe that he'd wandered off. Whichever, she didn't care. Lethe was going to be furious, or worried, or both.
She could see him through the branches of the thick fir tree. Just a step closer to it. He always did this. Walked up to a tree as if to inspect its frozen limbs, when really he was going to take a pull from a flask. Just when he was close enough and raising his arm with flask in hand Vedette half launched herself out of the tree, wrapped her arms around him and yanked him beneath the blanket of needles and snow. With her mouth pressed to his ear, and one hand over his mouth Vedette whispered. "It's me, Vedette. Don't yell or she'll hear us."
