Character name: Chance Yates Age: 31 Profession: AM labs--> bio-technician
Power, if applicable: n/a
Where do they live?: AM Apt 706 with Miss Cayenne Pepper.
Personality: Chance is sarcastic even when he's in a good mood. He will often play devil's advocate not for the benefit of a different view, but just to be an ass. It is often times hypocritical and he is acutely aware of this. He is humorously pessimistic and will say things he doesn't necessarily mean or remember later, mostly because he has no real investment in casual conversation. It's not that he's anti-social, though he does tend to turn people away from him with his attitude, it's just that he knows how unpredictable, unorthodox and un-making-of-any-sense people can be. He'd rather not have to deal with that unless the situation calls for it. In other words, he will hold professional relationships, but hardly anything more. Include his general distrust of people (again, because of the knowledge that lies far outweigh truths and people are crazy complicated) and it would be an eye-popper if Chance DID have friends. After all, you'd have to possess a strong hardness of the heart to steal from your own mother and abandon her in a less than ideal situation, and while it did cause a number of guilt trips early on in Chance's new-found independence, he has long since gotten over it. Kick the Romantic's opinion to the side because Chance does not have a heart of gold beneath it all. First and foremost, he serves and looks out for himself. It's a harsh world out there and he does not want to be a causality. (Not for such a stupid reason, anyway.)
Maybe he is overbearingly cynical, but there is no denying the many fuck ups Chance has witnessed in his life, including his own. Because of these, it's hard to let the man down - he hasn't got high expectations of people to begin with. People, to him, are like jack-in-a-boxes, and their surprises are generally bad news. Or maybe, people are too much like people, and if people weren't so people-y, he would be more welcoming of them. Chance doesn't dwell too long on why he views the rest of society in such a skewed light because he'll confuse himself if he does. The simple truth is that he both over-thinks and judges too quickly. Contradictory, table for one.
One of Chance's greatest faults is his utter aversion to beautiful, charming women. They remind him all too keenly of his mother and the connotations leave a bitter taste in his mouth. He will go to great lengths to avoid anyone who matches this criteria regardless of whether or not they're truly akin to Joyce, and if he is forced to reckon with them, it becomes painfully obvious that he wishes the floor would swallow him whole. It's a combination of disgust and discomfort. Naturally, there are women who would grind his bias to dust, but his eagerness to split the scene never allows for the opportunity. Another fault carried from home is his irrational fear of commitment. He'd have casual flings and one night stands throughout his later education, but would shy away from anything serious because of his fear that someone would do to him what his mother would do to other men...despite his lack of funds. (Thus the "irrational" bit.)
