Who: Sofia Mantega When: Sunday night Where: A cell in the sherrif's office. Colorado. What: Narrative. After a stressful year, Sofia lashed out with her wind powers and found herself under arrest.
Sofia Mantega was finally as physically trapped as she felt socially. Surrounded by concrete walls in a tiny cell that had a very unwelcoming odor, Sofia felt the burden of her situation more than ever. This was the future she had carved out for herself, after using her aerokinetic powers to lash out at her father by attacking one of his grocery stores. She didn't hurt anyone and that was never the intent, but she was just so mad. She wanted to take out all this frustration that had built up in her life, ever since her father came into her world and turned it upside down.
When Sofia learned that her father not only was alive but willing to care for her after her mother's passing, it was the only ray of sunshine Sofia had during a troubled time. She had clung to the idea the whole way on the trip to America, willing to sacrifice her friends and her home if it meant having a happy reunion with her parent. To her surprise, Walter Barrett was nothing like Sofia envisioned. Sure, he was handsome, but he was also rude and unwelcoming. He made no time for Sofia and she was treated like a second-class citizen in her own family, her father's assistant taking better care of her than she did. Sofia had put on her best front as she always did, trying to be all smiles and find the best of the situation. Her life may have stunk at home, but perhaps she could meet new friends in American school? Sofia planned on school being her happy outlet, proving to her that she hadn't made a mistake in coming here.
It did the opposite. Sofia had in fact made a mistake in coming to America, for believing in her fairytale dream of her father. The children at Sofia's private school were on rich and snobbish. They had no interest in an 'outsider' like her due to her accent and the fact she hadn't grown up with the other girls. Few were cordial enough to even speak to her, and when Sofia was addressed it was behind her back in hateful sentences that the wind brought to her ear. To the adolescent Sofia, her life was completely over. NO ONE LIKED HER! It was all her father's fault for bringing her to America, Sofia decided. Especially when he wouldn't even care for her. So she lashed out as best he could, attacking his business.
A part of her felt better, using her powers in a way that Walter had restricted since she moved. Her mother had always been encouraging. But in the end, Sofia didn't feel better at all; she felt worse. Now she was in trouble, her father would definitely never like her, and now she didn't have a home at all - not even her father's mansion or his assistant. Walter Barrett faced down Sofia while she was being held in the sherrif's office and renounced their ties. He wouldn't press charges in order to help this 'blow over', but he would do nothing else for her. Sofia was on her own. This cold cell was Sofia's life now, and whatever fate awaited her after her requisite holding of 24 hours was over.
