Who: Regan and Doug
What: Chess
Where: Rec room
When: Monday night.

Doug was sitting in the Rec room, stretched out on an out of the way couch and all his focus on the crossword in his hands. It was a tough one and he still felt foggy which made things worse so he didn’t even notice anything else going on in the room.

Regan was bored out of her mind. She sat cross-legged on the couch, flipping through channels on the television set. Sitcoms, news, reality tv.... she finally settled on a Hollywood entertainment segment and tossed the remote carelessly beside her. It was actually pretty quiet in here tonight, aside from Doug and a few others.

Board games were strewn about the rec room that were carelessly left by other students. She surveyed a started game of Chess just a few feet away from her on the table. Regan glanced over the black and white checkerboard, "Poorly played", she commented aloud and began resetting the pieces. When Doug looked up, she merely gestured to the chessboard with a cocked smile.

Regan lay back against the couch again and her eyes dulled on the tv. A few more minutes of this mind-numbing experience and she was going to gloss over.

It took Doug a moment to get Regan’s meaning when she gestured at the chess board but when he did he smiled a little and got up to walk over. He sat down at one end of the table. “Care for a game?” He asked to confirm.

"You're kidding." It wasn't a question, more of a statement. "I'll have to warn you Doug...."

'Playing Chess with a telepath is a stupid move.' She thought smugly.

"I'm pretty good." She warned with a grin. She had actually been playing her whole life. Her father owned an elaborate and expensive chess set at home, and the two often played together. In fact, it was their only real father-daughter she could remember sharing with him. "But sure, why not?" Regan swiveled the board around, "I'm white."

"I'm no slouch myself." Settling down he looked over the board and mentally prepared himself. He wasn't at his best but he did have a good amount of experience.

"Sure" He said to her assertion that she'd be white.

"Which means I go first," Regan grinned again. She plucked up the knight and moved it into position. This game was going to end real quick.

Then again... Doug was a big nerd, like we're talking big... Hmm... maybe she shouldn't underestimate him. 'No worries Regan, just dive into that massive head of his and find his strategy if you run into trouble.'

"So Dougy, how have you been holding up this week?" Seemed like that was the question to ask everyone after this power loss fiasco.

Inching a pawn aheadhe shrugged at her question. "Things are still kind of fuzzy, or dull I guess, I really don't get how people can stand seeing things like this all the time. At least the Professor's figured out what to do about it though." He said. He was adappting but it was hard. He was used to that constant humm of meaning in the background of everything. "What about you? Trapped with Ms. Frost can't be too fun."

Her last few moves opened up the way for more stronger pieces on the board. "Oh my god tell me about it... but y'know? I think old Frosy lost her's too..." Regan smirked, her fingers hovering over the white queen, but she decided against it and slid the bishop instead.

"Mine are still in 100% working order, I was out on Saturday and JP and I were completely unaffected. But I noticed Frosty's usual mental defenses and telepathic abilities were.... well... absent." Regan recalled when Emma actually had to get out of bed just to check on them, instead of reaching out telepathically as she could have done easily with her powers. "Totally bizarre, but maybe she's just messing with us." Frost was fairly quiet about it, if she did lose her abilities due to all this. But you could never be too sure or comfortable around Frosty.

Doug meanwhile had been focusing his moves on forming a complicated defensive web. “Really? It’s weird to think of her not being all powerful and terrifying.” He said. “Well that was lucky right? I wonder why some people that were here kept their powers.”

"The whole thing is weird," Regan agreed, "I'm starting to wonder if it was selective, or planned."

She pitched forward, resting her elbow on her knee. Regan leaned in on the palm of her hand as she surveyed the board. Hmm... Doug's web was beginning to weave and she was finding herself struggling to make an offensive move without a considerable sacrifice. Hmm, decisions, decisions.

"Trust me, you have no idea how awkward it is to - number one: Room with Emma Frost, and number two: Have her physically check up on you in the middle of the night. Totes weird. Me and Tabby thought she was going to kill us in our sleep."

She slid a white rook forward, conquering a black knight. "In fact it was that very evening, Saturday. We stumbled in really late past curfew, JP and I, and Frost was just on fire. She let us off pretty easy after she calmed down about it. Xavier needed her help to figure all this power-loss mess out... so she let us go free." She surveyed the board again, "When I woke up on Sunday, I realized everyone lost their powers. So bizarre, I thought I was still drunk."

Doug nodded, moving a bishop in to take the rook, left open by the move. "Wow. I'm surprised your still alive after that one." He said. " Selective seems like it might fit. Most of the people with really inconveinent powers seem to have lost them at least. Don't know how the rest of us fit in though."

Regan shrugged broadly, "No clue."

She eyed the board then looked at Doug... there needed to be a way to take out that other knight... but the way his defenses were set up, Regan didn't want to lose her queen. Her lips pursed in thought.

She moved a pawn forward, "Hey Doug?" When he looked up and locked eyes with her, the pieces of the chess board seemed to have rearranged their pattern slightly. Regan had set up a 'fake' arrangement, leaving her white bishop wide open to be taken by a black pawn.

Of course, this was just an illusion.

In fact, the Bishop was actually a pawn, and if Doug took the move, he'd leave his queen wide open to be conquered by her rook.

"Sorry, nevermind, I forgot." She gestured to the board, "Your turn."

"Oh, alright then." He pondered the board for a moment before makeing a move on the oppisite end of the board, taking a safe pawn in the proccess.

Regan snorted, "Doug, Doug, Doug..." she shook her head dramatically and gave him an incredulous look. "You're not getting tired, are you?"

Regan killed her little illusion and the board changed back to normal. His queen was right there, ready for the taking. Regan slid her bishop forward to take his queen. Of course, this put her bishop in a compromising situation, but she didn't care. It was a well needed sacrifice to bring her closer to victory.

How did that happen? Oh well, nothing to do about it now. He took the bishop and put on a faked smirk. "All part of the plan." He answered.
