Despite how upset he looked, the first thing that caught Laurie's attention was that she had walked in on Josh shirtless. Josh was shirtless! Laurie's face turned a bright red, though she looked down at the cake in her hands to try and hide this fact. Though as she thought about it, and thought about who had just left his room- and in what attire!- Laurie's embarrassment was quickly replaced by jealousy, and a tinge of anger. But she wasn't going to jump to conclusions, no matter how obvious those conclusions seemed!
But she could tell that her feelings were inappropriate for the moment as Josh silently located his shirt and pulled it on, and only glancing up at him occasionally, Laurie knew her timing was the worst. As Josh started to speak, Laurie could hear the edge in his voice and almost thought it most appropriate to excuse herself- but then his tone became quiet, and more gentle, and Laurie swallowed back her nervousness as she responded just as quietly, "I... wanted to wish you happy birthday... I made you a cake... it's not much, but... um... I wanted to make you something, so..." She trailed off, not sure what else to say as she avoided making eye contact with Josh.
She moved slowly, still now sure that she should be here- and still slightly upset at the situation she walked in on- but as she set the cake down on his desk, she cleared her throat and finally looked up at Josh, asking almost in a whisper, "Josh... are you okay?"
