Laurie hadn't meant to eavesdrop. She hadn't meant to interrupt anything either. Actually, right before Alani came storming out, Laurie had been in the process of backing away from the door and starting to head back to her room- it's not like she had to be here right now. But she had been, and had heard more than her fair share of the yelling within the room before deciding that she had picked an awful time to try and also give Josh a birthday surprise, though not nearly as bold as Alani's birthday surprise.
Laurie nearly dropped the birthday cake she had made for Josh when the sound of splintering wood accompanied the slam that was made as Alani stormed out of Josh's room. Laurie then nearly dropped the cake again as Alani nearly ran into her as she stormed down the hallway, trying to get away from Josh's room as quickly as possible. Laurie then nearly dropped the cake for a third time as she realized what Alani was wearing. Face turning bright red and tears now burning in her eyes, Laurie didn't know what to do. She couldn't figure out why she was so upset- she knew that Josh and Alani were involved somehow, and she had her somewhat awkward crush on Jay, right?- but she was. She was jealous, and upset, and unreasonably angry at how her surprise was turning out.
But as she looked to the broken door, Laurie felt that Josh was probably more upset than she could possibly be from the parts of the conversation she had caught while trying to work up the courage to knock on his door. Sighing, Laurie walked over, knowing she could talk openly to help someone else sort out their feelings, even if she was too shy to talk about her own, and gently knocked, asking quietly, "Josh? It's Laurie... Can I come in?"
