An oppressive silence had fallen over the boy's dormitories at dinner time and Jamie thought it was the perfect backdrop for what came next. The silence helped him concentrate and as he walked around his room, absorbing his dupes, he practiced what he would say. This phone call was very personal and although the dupes were for all intents and purposes him, it still felt weird having someone else in the room.
Jamie took a seat on the edge of his bed and rubbed his sweaty palms on the course fabric of his jeans. Why is my heart racing? He idly wondered. Cause you haven't spoken to them for such a long time. Another part of him whispered back. The voice, while annoying, made a good point. It had been almost a year since he conversed with his parents on his last birthday. All other holidays had been taken care of with an appropriate greeting card and left at that. This year though, he was going to change things. He was going to call them on every holiday. Starting today!
So with sweaty hands (hadn't he wiped them off?) he dialed his home phone number and waited to be connected. What seemed like an eternity passed before the phone connected and began ringing. It took several more moments of patience before the phone was picked up. A man's throaty rumble filled the other end of the speaker and Jamie grinned. "Hey Dad. It's Jamie. Loo--"
"I know who it is." Daniel Madrox cut him off. Before Jamie could say something else Daniel pressed on. "Why are you calling us James? Did something happen at that school of yours."
"No, sir. I just thought.. well.. seeing as what today was I just--"
"Spit it out boy. Your mother and I have plenty of work to do if we want to eat tonight." Jamie never noticed it before, after all it had been so commonplace before, but his father's voice was tainted with contempt. How long had that been there?
"Yes, sir. Happy Father's Day." Jamie tried his best to enunciate as he held his head in his hand.
"Right." Daniel responded before clearing his throat again. The line went dead as the elder Madrox hung up the receiver. Jamie flopped back onto his bed and starred at the ceiling, phone still clutched to his ear. Now he remembered why the last year had been nothing but greeting cards.
