Who: Megan (narrative)
Where: Perimeter of the school
When: Tuesday afternoon (backdated)
What: Flight practice and crashing
Now that school was out, Megan had a lot of free time. She decided to use that time productively and practice her flying. Since giving up her helmet her flying had improved. She had to start paying more attention, because her crashes actually hurt now. But she still didn't think she was good enough, especially not for the team power training. She had to get better. She did not want to bring Generation X down.
She walked outside, mentally psyching herself out. I have to get better. For the team. She jumped in the air, flapping her wings. She hovered for a few seconds before taking off at her maximum flying speed. She zoomed around the school. Her first lap was a personal record. She had never flown that fast before.
She landed and took a drink from the water bottle next to her. It was a good run, but she knew the other flyers were better. She didn't consider that her wings were different from Warren and Jay. She could not reach their speeds. Her wings were better for maneuverability than for speed. Instead of working on her agility she focused on her speed.
Megan jumped in the air again. She took off without stopping to hover. She flew as fast as her insect wings would take her. She zoomed around the institute. She built up speed as she flew around. I need to go even faster. She thought on a straightaway. She willed herself to go even faster.
She didn't slow down as she rounded a corner, or tried to round a corner. Her wings wouldn't handle the sudden change in direction and she lost control. She flew straight toward the forest at flew speed. A tree was approaching very quickly. She tried to slow down, but couldn't. She put out her arms to protect her face the best she could. This was going to hurt.
Suddenly chirps came from the trees surrounding her. Dozens of squirrels appeared out of nowhere. Led by a squirrel with a bright pink bow, the squirrels jumped from the branches, linking arms. They formed a large net made entirely out of squirrels. Megan crashed into the net. A few links came undone and she crashed through it, luckily not harming the squirrels in the process. It was enough to slow her down though. She hit the tree, but it was no more than a small bump rather than a large crash.
Megan turned to thank the squirrels that had saved her life, but they had all fled. Well almost all had fled. One single one remained. The leader. Megan offered her hand to the squirrel with the bow. It climbed into it. "Thank you, little squirrel. You saved my life. "
The squirrel chirped something Megan couldn't understand and climbed on to her shoulder. "Let's be friends, little squirrel. Come on. I'll show you how I fly without running into anything."
Megan began her practice again. She wasn't going for speed any longer. She couldn't risk flying fast with the squirrel on her shoulder. Instead she flew through the forest, dodging trees.
