Who: Doreen Green
When: Sunday night, at curfew
Where: Various trees outside the mansion
What: Staking out her possible new home
This was the place? Doreen stared at the mansion, clinging to a branch midway up a tall oak. She looked distinctly unimpressed, tail drooping and face deadpan, an expression rarely seen on the easily excitable teenager. Okay, so the place was big. But she had thought a place that housed such a large population of fellow mutant teenagers would have a lot more flashy lights. And lasers. And jet planes. And dancing robots! The most exciting thing she’d seen so far was a horse. And she could see horses almost anywhere! How boring.
But Iron Man had insisted. And promised to contact her when (he’d said if, but Doreen wasn’t a fan of the word if) he needed a sidekick. She had to be patient and train here. But she had to make sure. She needed to work in a place where she could vault further up the superhero ladder if Iron Man took his time getting back to her. And she wasn’t about to join a new school if it was anything like her last one. So she needed to research. Thoroughly. And she would train while doing so! She would train while doing so! She wanted to see how stealthy she could be.
She jumped from the tree branch to another tree, then another, then another, getting closer to the mansion without ever touching the ground. Like a strange dark cloud behind her, every squirrel that lived in the forest followed, silent as shadows, though they would chatter excitedly with Doreen if she turned to talk to them. They were all such great friends already! But they heeded her wish for silence and secrecy. This was a time for sneakiness, not socializing!
She was glad for the forest surrounding the school. There were trees close to several of the windows, though they stood like silent sentries rather removed from the rest of the leafy army. Undaunted, Doreen scrambled up to a tall tree at the edge of the copse, eyes focused on the branches of one near a huge window, facing in to the main hall. She gathered herself up, scrunching in small, then gave a massive leap.
Her squirrel friends couldn’t follow such a powerful jump, but two clung to her shoulders for the ride. She made the massive leap, landing on the trunk close to the ground. She dug her nails into the bark and scrambled up its side, grinning proudly. “I did it, Monkey Joe!” she breathed excitedly. The larger squirrel held himself up proudly. The squirrel on the other shoulder, decorated by a bright pink ribbon, merely let out a breath, as if sighing.
Doreen suck out her tongue in concentration, peering in through the window. Her squirrel-like eyes gleamed red in the low light. “Oooh,” she squealed under her breath, looking in at a hall. “So many kids!” Curfew had just been called and students were filing from various rooms to the main stairs. “Oh, Tippy-Toooe! Look at him, he’s blue!” Doreen said, pointing. He disappeared up the stairs and Doreen instantly took off, making her way to another tree, glancing in various windows. She paused several trees in, clutching a thin branch, peering in a window at another blonde. She’d passed several. “This can’t be right. There’s only girls in these rooms.” She went back on her quest, making her way around to the outside of the boy’s dorm. It took several rooms before she caught sight of the blue-furred boy again. “Awwwuh!” she exclaimed to Tippy-Toe, “look at his tail, it’s so cute!”
Tippy-Toe gave a quiet chitter, amused and concerned. With the cooing Squirrel Girl, it was going to be a long night. Doreen finally pried herself away from staring into the mansion, retreating back to the forest.
