[ josh ] Josh and Bobby had been hanging out in Bobby's dorm after dinner because he absolutely had to study for his biology test tomorrow and it was impossible to get anything done with Alex screaming at the X-Box headset constantly. He normally wouldn't have worried too much about it but he had been seriously slacking lately and McCoy had gotten on his case. Of course his former roommate Bobby hadn't been much less of distraction however as the two friends soon ended up just lounging around and talking for a good portion of the evening. They had just been commiserating over their recent bad luck with girls when the muffled sound of glass breaking down the hall followed by the Professor's voice in their minds startled them. Josh jumped to his feet, his biology book falling shut as he stood. Xavier made a brief telepathic announcement to the students instructing them to simply follow the directions of the staff members without question and to evacuate to the lower levels of the mansion as calmly and quickly as possible.
There were heavy footfalls and shouting now coming from outside and Josh glanced back to Bobby anxiously. "What the hell is going on?" he asked, more to himself than Bobby as he watched the door as though it would burst open at any second. As one of the older students and a healer, Josh knew he needed to get out there and help the others. "Come on," he said to Bobby, pulling the door open and peeking out into the hallway. He watched as an uncharacteristically stern-faced and tight-lipped Forge hurried a group of confused and panicked younger students down the hall.
[ bobby ] Bobby Drake had thought that a lot of Josh's logic was flawed about his homework situation and his girl situation, but he never argued when he had a social outlet to use. He was honestly distracting Josh with conversation as much as Alex would have with his screaming. It also didn't help that they started talking about girls, Bobby still mystified about why his golden brother had such a hard on for the wolf girl named after a weather condition and all the other quiet ones at the school. His list of candidates and issues Bobby felt was far more stifled compared to his myriad of recent attempts (and failures) at Xavier's. He'd have told the other boy directly if Xavier hadn't interrupted them telepathically, explaining the rumblings of panic outside the door. Mr. Forge and several of the other students outside were making so much noise. Did someone just bang on his door? They had kept running though, nobody directly in front of them when they opened the door to see the panic.
"Wait. What's going on exactly? Is this like a tornado warning or a 'we're under attack' warning?" Bobby considered a loud, his video game-biased paranoia showing. Much like when everyone at the school had lost their memories weeks ago, Bobby's first instinct was that some other higher power was behind it. Government? Mafia? God? At least if it was a tornado, maybe he could blame God for that one. Out of curiousity more than a desire to flee, Bobby listened to Josh and the two boys took up the rear of the evacuation that was on their floor. Mr. Forge seemed to be getting more ahead of them now, taking the students out of the dormitory and into the main building to get to the lower levels. It was while they were supposed to be making a quick dash inside that Bobby squinted into the night sky, noticing several lights from around the front of the school as well as inside the windows. "Dude! It looks like the power was killed in the main building." He smacked Josh with the back of his hand on the other boy's chest to stop him and get his attention.
[ josh ] Josh stopped suddenly when Bobby held his arm out, following his gaze to the main building. "Dude, a tornado? In New York?" he said skeptically, though around this place anything seemed possible at this point. He glanced up and down the empty hallway, the sound of the evacuating students getting fainter as they headed away from them down the stairs. Just then the lights flickered and then went out as the power was cut to the boy's dormitory as well, the hallway now dimly lit by only the red glowing exit sign on the far wall. "Shit..." Josh muttered nervously. "Hold on a sec, I didn't see Alex, did you?" he asked, turning back to Bobby. He sighed. That idiot roommate of his was probably still yelling at the X-Box.
The two crept out of the doorway and hurried down the hall toward Alex and Josh's dorm. They didn't get very far however when a sudden scraping noise coming from the other side of the outside wall caused Josh to pause. And then the window across from them exploded sending shards of glass flying everywhere. Josh ducked and covered his face with his arms as a black clad intruder came climbing in through the broken window. Josh cautiously lowered his arms, his heart hammering in his chest as the little cuts from the glass healed and disappeared. The two boys were now face to face with what appeared to be a soldier. An armed soldier. And there was another one climbing up behind him. Oh. Shit.
[ alex ] Leave it to Alex to be unaware of what was happening longer than necessary. Holed up in his dorm, there seemed to be noises that were not conclusive to his videogame going on. It wasn't until a rather large blast, and shattering glass that drew him to pause the game and venture out of the room. Something was up; Alex being his unusually curious self went to investigate. That was when he was met in a solider sandwich. There was Josh and Bobby in the hallway, poised between tactically outfitted men, trying to do some undercover mission that Alex was sure had nothing to do with the well being of Xavier's. And they had guns. Whoa, whoa. Not good.
Alex immediately had caught the attention of one of the intruders, who had whipped around to point a gun at him now. Shit, fuck, damn, crap. Alex's face became rather serious. He could probably knock them out faster than they could shoot right? Bobby could ice up and Josh.. well, as long as he wasn't knocked out. He was rethinking suddenly that he should have taken up Scott on combat sessions. Emma Frost on power training. Maybe then he wouldn't find himself falling into a defensive stance and his powers abruptly about to go haywire. He really had no control over them except when he wanted them off or on. And when they were on.. they were definitely on.
As his hands began to glow, being seconds away from probably levelling the whole second floor of Xavier's, there was a loud shot. So much for defending himself or even his best friends. Alex took the shot in his shoulder, whipping with impact. His hand immediately stopped glowing and went to reach for what he thought would be the spot bleeding on his shoulder. Nope, just a tranquilizer dart. But damn did it hurt. And damn, he'd contemplate the feeling of being shot..when he wasn't blacking out and falling to the floor.
[ bobby ] Bobby Drake's instinct was to ice up when the glass of the window exploded, protecting itself. His ice form was always a scientific oddity. Ice was typically somewhat brittle, but luckily for Bobby his seemed to be tougher than his own skin and just as mobile. His icy sheen melted back to pink flesh, at least what could be seen of him now that the power had been cut. But there was still enough light for Bobby to see how clearly fucked they were with an armed solider before them. And then, Alex had walked out. They were definitely fucked now. Bobby hoped Alex wouldn't do anything stupid, and granted, he really didn't. The guy was defending himself. But his powers being the first to charge up in front of the now two soldiers visibly present made him the first target. Bobby's mind raced in the scant seconds leading up to Alex being shot. They were armed. This wasn't a game. This wasn't a Danger Room. And apparnetly, now, they were hostile.
"Alex!" Bobby yelled, thinking for all intents and purposes his friend had just been shot in the shoulder with an actual bullet. Bobby's noise made him easily the next target, but he was faster and more in control of his abilities than Alex was. Before he had even finished shouting, Bobby was in his ice form again. Frost immediately kicked at his feet and he was propelled forward on an ice slide, right arm birthing what looked to be a large shield made of ice. He slammed into the soldier in closest proximity to them, immediately tilting himself and his shield enough to size up where the other guard was who had just climbed in from the window. That same soldier went to raise his own dart gun, when it exploded into a sphere of spiky ice. Bobby didn't have to point at something to make it iced up, it just helped him focus. And it looked kind of badass. But now was not about being badass. Now was about survival.
"Run! I got this!" Bobby called back to Josh only when he felt he had a split second to breathe. Both guards were still conscious, but one was knocked down and the other was unarmed. Bobby turned back to the guy who was still armed with a tranquilizer gun, throwing his ice shield at the guy's head. The soldier's helmet beared most of the force of the attack, but it gave Bobby enough of an opening to impale his gun with ice too. He then continued on with that guard, for fear he was close enough to Josh and Alex's body to still do them damage. He shot an ice blast at the guy's arms to knock him back and trap his hands, then the guy's legs in order to ensure he didn't run anywhere.
[ josh ] Josh watched as Alex staggered back and fell down to the ground. And before he could stop Bobby from rushing in to what was apparently certain death, the boy was icing up and charging the soldiers. Unlike Alex fortunately, Josh had at least remembered his training and took Bobby's distraction as an opportunity to duck past the preoccupied intruders and rush to his unconscious roommate, kneeling down beside him. "Alex!" he said frantically, fearing the worst as he leaned over his unconscious friend. His hands started to glow as his mind raced to recall everything he'd ever learned about gun shot wounds. Alex was still breathing, and there didn't look to be too much blood...It was the that Josh noticed the dart protruding from his roommate's shoulder and he paused, looking at it curiously. He reached down and pulled it out. "Tranquilizer dart?" he muttered to himself, turning back towards Bobby just in time to see him chuck the makeshift ice shield at one of the soldier's heads. Oh shit. He immediately grabbed Alex's limp arms and lifted him up a bit so he could wrap his own arms around his chest, trying to drag him back inside the dorm room and out of the fray.
[ bobby ] Too prideful of the fact he felt like he was winning, Bobby let his guard down long enough to allow himself the pleasure of dealing a punch across the soldier's face who he had just iced up. The blow hurt his fist, but it was the greatest feeling of victory. Hell yeah. Bobby Drake was Iceman, the Super Hero. He could see his name in lights and everything now. Turning back now to face the other soldier, Bobby Drake's smirking face was met with the butt of the man's handgun. Unaware that the soldier had gotten to his position so fast, Bobby took a full reaction and tripped down onto the ground. He smacked his face into the hardwood floor, dazing him even further. Out of survival reflex, icy spikes grew from the moisture on his right arm and he slapped it behind himself as he sat up. The spikes turned into shards, leaving Bobby's arm as projectiles. He hadn't really tried that trick before, but it seemed do to the trick. One of them managed to pierce the man's body armor, sticking out of his lower right side.
Unfortunately for Bobby, the soldier was still armed and now considered the mutant boy a hostile threat. The Weapon X soldiers didn't have orders to use hostile force - unless attacked. Spurned by the pain he was in for not finishing Bobby sooner, he cocked his gun and fired a shot into Bobby. It hit his shoulder from being turned out and facing the man to deliver the ice spikes, whipping Bobby straight back onto his face. Bobby Drake hadn't known pain like this. It was nothing like having your fleshy nose busted or John trying to roast you from above. He had heard the noise of ice cracking and could feel the bullet lodged in his arm. For the first time, Bobby's miraculously tough ice form seemed just as brittle to him as actual ice. He moaned as he rolled off his face and onto the right side of his head, peripheral vision not even noticing the soldier. The growling in pain solider who snapped into a kneeling position and placed the gun to Bobby's head.
And fired two more shots. The noise of ice shattering joined the echo of the bullet leaving the gun chamber.
[ josh ] Josh could do little more than watch in horror as Bobby's winning streak came to an abrupt end. He had managed to drag Alex halfway back into their room but he froze with fear when Bobby went down. And then the soldier fired two bullets into his friend's head sending chips of ice scattering across the wooden floor, the sound of the gunshots echoing in the empty hallway. There was no way Bobby was still alive after that, and Josh couldn't bring people back from the dead, no matter how much medical knowledge he had or how powerful his healing abilities were. He was shaking all over, glancing down as a chunk of ice slid towards him. Oh god. Oh god. Bobby was dead. Alex was unconscious. And now he was alone in the hallway with no offensive powers and cornered by the armed soldier who was now turning his attention toward him now that he'd taken down his best friends. Wild thoughts started to fly through Josh's head about how he could get to Bobby or wake Alex up or how he could maybe take a bullet and feign death before healing himself as the soldier walked towards him with a smug look on his face. The soldier had already been briefed on the golden kid's power in detail thanks to Vanessa having copied him before and knew that his ability wasn't offensive or dangerous. Not to mention he was feeling rather confident after defeating the ice kid.
Josh was still sitting on his knees when he let go of Alex and moved to stand, tears welling in his eyes. The soldier however immediately raised his gun and shouted "Don't move!" Josh stopped immediately, unable to tear his eyes away from Bobby's terribly still body on the floor, even as the soldier stepped forward and pressed the gun to his forehead. Holy fuck, he was going to die. Where was everyone else!? Surely one of the telepaths would realize what was happening and run up to his rescue! He didn't get the opportunity to think about that for long however as the soldier cocked the gun and Josh moved suddenly on shear instinct. Hell no. He was not going to die like this! He reached up and shoved the soldier's arm away from his head as hard as he could, causing the gun to fire a shot into the floor beside him. In a flash he was on his feet and his hands were groping for the intruder's neck and face, the only exposed skin. He struggled with the stronger man but finally managed to grasp his neck viciously. He had never felt such hatred in his life at this bastard who had just murdered his friend and he wanted him dead too. Before he could even realize what was happening, his golden hands started to turn black as the soldier began choking and sputtering. Josh was filled with blind rage as the unfamiliar liquid blackness spread quickly up his arms covering his entire body as he continued to siphon the life out of the soldier. The man crumbled to his knees, gasping for breath and making horrible gurgling noises until after a few moments he went sickening still and silent, falling to the floor in a heap. Then Josh's eyes rolled up into the back of his head and he too collapsed.
[ emma ] Emma Frost's heels couldn't carry her quickly enough through the boys dormitory. The White Queen was in her diamond form, responding to the sounds of an attack she had heard in the boys dorm. She had picked up panicked thoughts before her diamond form had gone back up. While she had successfully gotten all of the girls' dorm evacuated with the help of Jean and Callisto, she grew concerned at the slower speed Forge and Hank were retrieving the lads. Boys. They always had to be so difficult and Emma Frost thought to her icy self, emotions locked in her diamond state, how unsurprised she should be to find Bobby, Alex, and Josh lying on the floor between two soldiers. She watched as Josh had fallen to the ground alongside the soldier after having a hand to him, the soldier still after that. Her panic was now replaced with a horrible calmness. Even without her telepathy, she could tell that no one was moving save for one soldier who appeared to have every limb weighed down in ice like they were cement. At least the boys didn't go down without a fight. She was aware the intruders had tranquilizer darts on them by now, having deflected several shots earlier off her diamond hide, but was unaware they were armed beyond that.
She wished to drop her diamond form to assess the situation telepathically, but she couldn't do so safely until the soldier was taken care of. No remorse in her iced heart, even without knowing the fate of the three students, Emma walked up to the struggling man. He was shouting obsenities and she could spy blood trails on his face even in the shadows. Without warning, she grabbed the man by the neck and hoisted him up. "A shame you all seem to be outfitted with psionic dampers. You've cost me a lot of trouble and now I'm afraid you're of little use to me." The soldier was about to shout another anti-mutant tirade, when a monstrous CRACK filled the hallway that had been booming with battle moments before. The soldier's limbs went limp and Emma dropped the body to the floor like last season's out of style sweaters into the trash. In later retrospect, she will have wished she kept the hostage alive. It would have been easy to navigate his psi shields with time, but Emma was feeling especially unsympathetic right now.
Time was of the essence. She moved quickly to check on the students, fearing reinforcements for the soldiers may soon arrive. The closest student was Alex Summers. She could hear him breathing and spotted a tranquilizer dart at his side. That was one student alive, though needing to be carried about like an oversized, sleeping infant. Emma moved next toward ... well, at first she wasn't sure who it was. The boy's skin was an almost liquid black, eyes white. That's when she realized that his eyes were rolled into the back of his head and that the figure resembled Joshua Foley. "...my God." She bent down to him now with a clack of her heel on the floor. She ran a hand down his face, feeling for any breath, movement, and unusual texture. The boy had turned gold before, now black. Comforted by the fact a skin color change had been in Joshua's history, she was able to quickly write him off as 'relatively okay' when she could feel him breathing. Then she moved to Bobby Drake, noticing a pile of icy crumbs around the top of his head. "Oh my. ...it appears now you never really will have the chance to grow up." Emma bitterly analyzed, tilting Bobby's head as it appeared to be the source of the debris.
Even the darkness couldn't hide the fact that Bobby Drake's visage in silhouette was not the shape it should have been. He had been shot point blank in the head. Cracks in his iced up face ran from his right cheek and bridge of his nose over every surface of his right hemisphere. They led right up to the new canyon in the top right of his head. Bobby Drake was now missing roughly 1/5th of his skull. Where one would expect a creamy, brainy center to be though, there was only ice. Shattered, sharp, and choppy ice as if Bobby's head wasn't full of organs and a skull but rather solid ice like a sculpture. "This doesn't make any sense," Emma talked to herself. She didn't think the boy turned into pure ice when he shifted forms. And in fact, wasn't his ice form a force of will? If Robert Drake was dead, why hadn't he shifted back to his human ...
[ bobby ] "AHH!" Bobby Drake's closed, icy eyes suddenly shot open, having gone catatonic for a few moments reeling from the undescribable pain that was his head exploding. Oblivious to just how badly he was hurt outside of the fact it was painful, Bobby convulsed on the ground as if struggling to find the words and end his discomfort. He wasn't even aware that Miss Frost was there, now using the strength of her diamond form to hold the thrashing student down. The sound of ice being shuffled and scraped against the hardwood floor could be heard, Bobby's movements grazing his already wounded head against the debris that came out of it. Bobby's mouth was now making the sounds of like a pained, mute child trying to find words that would never come. He finally crossed some sort of panic barrier to manage. "...hnGOD..."
[ emma ] "Mr. Drake! Robert!" Emma insisted louder each time, hoping her words would restrain the boy where her strength was failing. She had a decent hold of him, but he was still capable of hurting himself further with the limited range of motion he had at his disposal. "Where the bloody hell is Henry?" She thought Beast or Forge would be right behind her. Surely they hadn't expected Emma to go off on her own and save the day? They must have thought more highly of her than to let her waltz off to her death, surely. She was prepared to drop her diamond form to telepathically calm the boy, when she heard someone fast approaching down the hall. Emma turned, icy eyes narrowed as she braced herself to have to play Superwoman and take more bullets for these boys until reinforcements would arrive.
Luckily, the form that emerged was a bouncing, blue, familiar one. "Henry! Thank god! I believe we have medical situations here." Emma instructed Beast along, paying no mind to the deceased soldiers. She wasn't sure what the best course of action was. They had to get them evacuated to the lower levels surely, but would even the infirmary be safe right now? She was pretty sure Charles was preparing to get everyone into the Danger Room in a panic room last resort. Emma didn't realize how serious the situation was until she noticed Hank disregarded his usual witty banter and went straight into medical instructions. Emma could only swear at herself for not being more diligent at her pilates classes when Henry instructed her to take Josh Foley. He was the lightest of the three, barring Bobby who however needed more delicate care. Alex was unceremoniously draped over Dr. McCoy's shoulder once Beast had confirmed that he really was only unconscious from tranquilizer.
Cradling the black skinned Elixir in her hands awkwardly, Emma made as swift as she could for the stairwell to return to the school. Hopefully, the powerhouses in the school faculty were pulling their share and holding off the soldiers in the main building still. She'd be most cross with Cyclops and Storm later if she learned the two of them had managed to be taken over by these second-rate green army men.
