RP: Draco/Ginny
Who: Draco/Ginny
When: afternoon, 20th December
Where: the new magic room
What: Draco is not like himself. Ginny might be really weirded out.

Draco had avoided most of the magical community on board, or at least the magical community from his reality, with the exception of Remus. It hadn't been a conscious choice, but with the blizzard, he'd stayed home, spent time talking to Caleb. He really didn't need to talk to many people anyway. It was even more awkward with Potter here. What was he supposed to do with that.

All of his problems seem to evaporate today. He wasn't sure why, but he wanted to protect everyone, even Potter. He was sure that he'd have done anything in his power to help them. Was this what it was to be a Gryffindor? And why was he feeling this way? Things seemed to have gotten more intense throughout the morning.

After lunch, he decided to head for the magical room. He was usually there for potions, but there were a few books from back home. If those didn't prove helpful, he might go to the library next. He sat down, reading a book when Ginny came in. "Ginny, how are you?" he said with a big smile. "I'm sorry I haven't welcomed you here sooner. How are Bill and Fleur?"

Like a cat who had been caught unawares, Ginny stopped walking with one foot still in the air and turned her head to stare at Malfoy. Draco Malfoy: smiling, apologising, calling her by her first name. 'What the fuck' Ginny mouthed, but did not say. No, what Ginny said, was a simple, slightly wary, "Hello, Malfoy. Unless they've turned up when I wasn't looking, they're exactly the same as you'd expect."

"Yes, but Theo said that you might be from our future, so I haven't seen them in months, maybe years. I was worried about their well-being, but I'm glad that they are doing fine." He liked Bill and Fleur, they had extended an olive branch when they didn't have to. He had a reason to worry about them, but why was he worried about her?

"I hope you're adjusting easily. It's difficult at the beginning and with Harry arriving, having a different room- I haven't seen him yet. I hope he's doing well too," he said, because he needed Potter to be alright. "He's gone through so much already, he doesn't deserve this. Or you."

Ginny settled both feet on the ground and turned to look at Malfoy, hip cocked, arms crossed. "Nott told me that you were from my future." She didn't bother to ask if that was a lie; clearly, Nott had the incentive, to tell the truth to Malfoy, and lie to her. And then, somewhat reluctantly, "They and the kids were both well when I saw them in February 2005." And then, even more reluctantly: "Teddy and Andromeda, likewise."

At his next comment, she stifled a laugh that he thought they were actually sleeping in separate bedrooms. "Harry and I are adjusting well, thanks," she said and eyed him speculatively, wondering if this was urgent enough for her to flag up with Harry this evening or if it could wait until tomorrow. "Are you alright, Malfoy?"

"Maybe he did say that." He ha even told him to like, but right now it hadn't seemed important. Still he didn't want Theo or Ginny upset, with him or each other. "Theo rarely pays attention so he might have gotten confused. I think he mentioned James so I put two and two together. For the record, I'm from September 2004." And why was he still talking? He should shut up now, but he was grateful about the information. "I'm glad, and thank you for telling me about Teddy and Aunt Andromeda."

He nodded. "Good, I'm glad. If there's anything I can do to help, don't hesitate to ask. I owe Harry so much that it's the least I can do." He frowned at the question. "I'm not sure. Why? Do you think there's something wrong with me?" He knew that there was something wrong, but he couldn't pinpoint how or why. Maybe talking to her would help. "Would you like to sit down? I came here to find a reason why I would suddenly ... Actually, I'd like to hear what you think first. It'd be a more objective analysis."

Ginny scrutinised Malfoy for a long moment. Whatever was going on, she was confident that this was not what Bill meant when he said that Malfoy was a different person than Ginny had known. And her noble-headed husband would want to know more about this, wouldn't he?

God, she was going to regret this.

"That's what I'm known for, objectivity about Malfoys," Ginny said dryly, sitting down only after she'd pulled the chair along to the other side of the table so she was as far away from him as she could get. "Yes, I think there's something wrong with you." Multiple things, actually she finished silently, not wanting to kick at that particular wasp's nest right now. "You're always astonishingly open about what you're thinking, and what you're thinking is not meant to be 'You know, what I really should be doing is apologising Ginny Potter for not saying hi to her sooner."

Draco laughed. "No, you're a Weasley. I always tell Bill that your family answers first and thinks later, but you have good instincts. Most Gryffindors do. Slytherins tend to second guess themselves too much to have good instincts."

He nodded. "I would have to agree with you." He shrugged. "I should be thinking that, because it's rude, and Mother would not want me to be rude to you or your husband, who's basically hiding out at the moment, but I shouldn't be saying it. Except right now, I actually want to say it, because I don't want you to feel bad. I don't want anyone to feel bad. I want to help people I don't even know. Something is going on."

"You don't have the ability to make me feel bad about myself, Malfoy, just narked off," Ginny informed him flatly, crossing her arms loosely over her chest as she eyed him scornfully, unimpressed by the slight to her family no matter the backhanded compliment he dressed it up with. "Have you pissed off any powerful witches lately? Anyone besides me who might think you could do with experiencing life as a kind and selfless person?"

"That's actually very good, but manners are still manners, and it doesn't change the fact that I actively feel like I don't want you to feel bad, whether because of me or someone else. Do you really think that's always the case?"

He shook his head. "The beautiful thing about this place is that I've managed to avoid plenty of people. It's really very resting to ignore everyone."

With difficulty, Ginny refrained from rolling her eyes. "I understand your point and your dilemma just fine, I'm just not too bothered about it." Then she grimaced. "But if you didn't bring this on yourself — which I'm still not ruling out, by the way — then the thoughts of other people on board could be being manipulated, too, and them I care about."

A thought occurred to her, and she drummed her fingers over her elbows. "Aren't you meant to be good at Occulmency? If this was someone doing this to you rather than something, would you know?"

"Your empathy is truly breathtaking," Draco replied, because wanting to take care of her didn't mean that he couldn't be snarky. "Of course, please do consult with your brilliant friends and let me know if you find something."

He nodded. "I'm very good at Occlumency, but that only works if someone is trying to read my mind. Even then, if the other person is really good, I could block him, but I wouldn't necessarily know. For example, Dumbledore routinely entered people's minds and while I would have been able to stop him in sixth year, I wouldn't have been able to know that he was trying if he pulled away soon enough. I don't think it's a mental compulsion, but something more advanced. I honestly don't know if I can express it better."
