James did his best to wear an expression of innocence as he joined Lily and Professor Slughorn in the Potions classroom after dinner. This was not really his fault. Okay, he had been whispering to Peter about something that had seemed important at the time, and Lily had leaned over to tell them to shut up, and James had turned around to argue and as a result landed them both in detention, but well, she could have kept her nose out of it, couldn't she? He forced himself not to look at her as Slughorn explained the details of their detention.
"I have collected all the school cauldrons that cannot be used because they are damaged, or there are remnants of ingrediants stuck to the inner surface that cannot be removed by traditional means," he said. "You will fix all of them please, or you will have to return again tomorrow night. Really, Mr. Potter," he gave James an appraising look. "I had thought you would have grown out of this sort of thing by now. And Miss Evans, it is about time you learned not to rise to the bait. I shall leave you to it then."
