Transfinite Transfiguration proved to be a Godsend. Why had he never noticed this book in the library before? Severus wasn't certain, but he was sure that this thing could have saved his years of agony, and it might very well be his ticket to an Exceeds Expectations on his O.W.L. the following June.
Anything that explained Transfiguration in terms of mathematics was something he could get behind. The analogies weren't always perfect, but they seemed to be close enough that he could start to envision what the hell he was supposed to be doing, or thinking, or understanding, even. He understood mathematics, and logic, even if Transfiguration had almost always escaped him.
The concepts had hovered right over his head, just out of reach, as if he might be able to grasp them, were he only taller. But this? With this book in hand, the pieces of the puzzle started to fall into place, and there was a whole series of them, as well: on Conjuring Spells, and Vanishing Spells, and Cross-Species Switches, and even the Animagus Transformation. With the help of this series, he might just be able to become an Auror, after all.
Severus looked up when a shadow fell across the page that explained how to change a matchstick into a needle in terms of finding the area under a curve and limits. "Hello, Lily," he said then, closing the book -- in spite of how intriguing it was -- and setting it aside. "How are you?"
