"Half the school wouldn't know if Skeeter knew how to keep her bloody fucking mouth shut," she retorted, her defenses rising higher with each moment he yelled at her. "If you were jealous, you should've said rather than getting angry after the fact. I didn't plan on hugging him, but that's what you do when someone saves your life. And if you don't like it, then I don't know what else to say to you."
Mary never swore, but she was so upset that she let the words spill out, not even caring if anyone else heard her. She didn't even want to hear his answer - especially if he was going to continue yelling at her about something so meaningless as a hug. And it was meaningless to her. Maybe it would have meant something to her before if she'd hugged James, but now it didn't.
Her eyes started to tear up and she moved past him to make it to the stairs, not wanting him to see how upset he'd made her.
