Satine smiled a sad, understanding smile. Her time as the "Sparkling Diamond" at Le Moulin Rouge gave her a full comprehension of what it was like to consider oneself "damaged goods".
"I understand the idea of feeling like damaged goods," she began. "Before I met my Christian I was what your culture would refer to as a Cortezan. I was the head of the ladies at the Moulin Rouge. I know we spoke about this briefly, but I had no belief in myself. Never thought myself able to be anything more than what I already was. And, if I found myself lucky, I would one day become a real actress."
