You suck at pep talks
Who: Adam and Mazie
Where: outside the tournament
When: midday
Adam had made it through his first match! There wasn’t even anything he could lie about it. He’d won. It was incredible. Of course it had been incredibly close and he’d almost been hurt pretty bad, but you know what? He’d won. And maybe he could do it again. He’d have to do it again because he had a break, but he had another match coming up before too long. He was sitting off to the side, trying to catch his breath, trying not to grin too much because of what Brett had warned against.
Mazie had been watching and was thoroughly pleased to see that Adam had won his match. She grabbed some ale, still not trusting the water in this place, and headed over to where he was sitting. "Good job, Rocky!" She said, grinning at him as she handed him the ale and knelt down near him. "You busted up at all?"
Adam looked up when she handed him the ale and took it, taking a swig of it. It was a little bitter, but it got the job done to at least quench some of his thirst. "Busted up enough. But nothing I won't live from," he said with a grin. Shifting with a tiny wince. Yeah, his ribs hurt a bit, but he'd live. "I won!"
"Hell yeah you did! That's awesome, man!" She said, grinning a little bit as she nudged him with her arm. "Now you gotta get in there and kick ass again! You can do it. Do you need anything else? A turkey leg or something. It's probably, what, like...10+ health, at least."
Adam winced again when she elbowed him, shaking his head. “Don’t do that.” He made a face when she spoke though shaking his head. “10+ health?” he asked. That didn’t make sense, but Mazie was a bit odd wasn’t she? “I’m okay. I just need to rest for a moment.” He ran his hands through his hair, then shook his head. “I have to do it again.”
Mazie got instantly somber, eyes settled on his. "Don't tell me what to do," She said very seriously, waiting another beat to impart that seriousness before speaking again. "Look, if you don't want to do this, get out of that armor and I'll take over. But seriously, you're fighting in a tournament and winning! What is there to be in a bad mood about?"
Adam didn't like that face, but he didn't know what to do about it otherwise. "Well it hurts when you stick your elbow in me. But fine." He let out a breath and shook his head. "Just a tiny bit nervous. If I did doing this Kyle'll kill me." He paused, hearing how that sounded and shook his head. "You know what I mean."
"Not more than any beating you're going to take out in that ring," Mazie retorted. She narrowed her eyes at him and then shook her head. "I mean it. You don't want to do it, give up the armor and I'll go out there. But if you are going to do it, you need to stop worrying about who's gonna do what when and just go kick ass. Because you sitting there, fretting like an old woman isn't gonna help you win."
Mazie watched him for another long moment before she just shook her head. "You guys are fucking confusing. Just do whatever the hell you want, man. Do you seriously want to do this or not? Because if you do, you gotta stop thinking about all this other shit and start figuring out who the hell you're right next and what you need to do in order to beat them. All the rest of this bullshit can wait."
"What did we do that was confusing?" Adam asked, getting up with a wince and doing what she said, trying to see the scoreboard and determine who his next opponent was. "Because I didn't realize I was being confusing." He almost told her she wasn't great with people but that was mean so he kept his mouth shut. "It's a green coat of arms with...is that a lizard? Or a wussy dragon on it?" Adam scanned the waiting area, trying to find the guy.
"You just are. You both are just strange." She said, shrugging a little. "always talking about your feelings and stuff." She squinted at the crest and nodded. "Does look like a quest dragon. Hopefully the Knight is wussy too."
Adam stopped and turned to look at her. "What did he say about his feelings?" That sounded important. Her hope for the next knight had him looking again frowning as he spotted the guy. "He's kind of huge." The man was taller than him for sure, which was alarming. He wasn't exactly short.
Mazie shook her head. “Nope. Not getting into this with you. You two are just weird as hell. But then again, I’ve never been in a relationship so...maybe you two are normal as all get-out. I don’t know.” She looked over at the other knight and made a face. “So what? You’re faster. Use it to your advantage, Speedy Gonzalez.”
“You can’t just say that and not get into this with me. I mean really? What did he say? I want to know,” Adam said frowning. That sounded important. “Am I faster? I don’t feel faster.” He really hoped he didn’t die as a result of this.
"He didn't say jack shit. But this right here, this freaking out bullshit? This is what I'm talking about. Jesus, I can't even mention one of you around the other without both of you losing your shit, over anything and everything. Everything is fine, Adam." Mazie said, looking back at the large man. "You have two options. You try to be faster. Or you bow out and go find Kyle. That's it really. Make your choice."
"You aren't really good at not making me nervous. And the last thing I need is him freaking out. He'll spiral himself into god knows what." Adam sighed and gave Mazie a dark look. "You really aren't one for pep talks either are you?"
"Both of you freak out. It's just what you two seem to do. And it's not like I know either of you that well or anything, but with you both freakin all the time, it doesn't exactly give me much direction to help." She ended up shrugging, watching his eyes after a moment despite his dark look. "Why should I give you a pep talk? I already gave you your two options. Pick one. Am I gonna stand here and tell you that guy probably isn't going to beat you into a pulp? No. Because I don't lie. But you might be able to outsmart him. Maybe."
"I don't freak out. I just...worry. Loudly." He needed to stop doing that. Pronto. "We're going to work on pep talks. Because they don't start with you might get beat to pulp or you could run away." He nodded but smiled then looked back at the guy. "Because I'm not giving up. I wanted to do this. I'm going to do it. I just need to be careful. And outsmart him. You should have led with that."
"I already told you, I don't do pep talks," She said, looking back at the big knight as he finished his warm up and headed toward the ring. "Ok then, Sherlock. It's looking like it's time to outsmart him. What've you got brewing in that noggin?"
"Right, right. Don't do people either do you?" Adam guessed, then looked out at his next move. "Attack with the shield," he said thinking of what Brett had shown him. "Not just the sword. And like you said...faster."
"People are tricky. I don't do people, no," She said, shaking her head as she looked back at his shield. "That could work. Shield and sword combo. And I'll insult him from over here, try to throw him off his game."
"We should work on that too," Adam said. Not that he did people that much better, but he had people now and he really thought everyone deserved people. "Sounds like a plan." He shook out his shoulders, hearing his name called out to say he needed to get into the ring. "Wish me luck." He smiled at her then rolled his shoulders again and started towards the ring.
"Go get 'em, Tiger! She said, grinning as she stepped back to watch him head back to his next fight while she began to plot her best medieval insults.
